Hepatitis B (HBsAg). Prices, Reviews, Ratings
Presence of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) in blood indicates a positive infection reaction. HBsAg, the virus’s outer shell’s molecular basis, resists various physicochemical impacts, surviving repeated freezing and thawing.

General Information
In acute disease, HBsAg is detectable in blood serum 1-2 weeks into the incubation period and the first 2-3 weeks of clinical manifestation, circulating only briefly, making early testing most effective.
A positive result indicates acute hepatitis.
ELISA is recommended for lab testing, detecting infection in over 90% of cases. In 5% of people, even sensitive tests fail, requiring anti-HBc IgM testing – another viral marker.
Indications for Hepatitis B (HBsAg) Testing
Primary indication is acute symptoms: fever, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain.
Testing is also recommended for:
- Healthcare workers with high infection risk;
- Unvaccinated individuals;
- Women planning conception;
- Patients pre-blood transfusion;
- Pre-hospitalization preparation;
- Residents of high-prevalence regions (mainly Africa/Asia).
How Hepatitis B (HBsAg) Testing Is Conducted
Avoid fatty/fried foods and medications 24 hours prior. Test mornings on an empty stomach, ordered by an infectious disease specialist or therapist. Factors like sample hemolysis or chylosis may affect results.
Positive results may indicate early/late-stage infection with seroconversion (antibody production) or infection with liver damage.
Turnaround Time for Hepatitis B (HBsAg) Testing
Results are available the next day post-blood draw.
