General Information

Class A immunoglobulins work with nonspecific immune components to maintain mucosal health. They bind to microbial and viral cells, preventing adhesion to body tissues.

Low levels indicate weakened systemic and organ-specific immunity or ongoing viral inflammation.

Elevated levels suggest:

  • Acute or chronic infections from bacteria, fungi, or parasites;
  • Liver pathologies;
  • Autoimmune processes (e.g., systemic lupus erythematosus).

Class A comprises up to 15% of soluble immunoglobulins. In serum, monomeric molecules are detected. IgA functions concentrate on mucosal surfaces and fluid tissues, with a secretory component preserving its properties post-digestive enzyme exposure.

Indications for Total IgA Testing

Main reasons include local immune responses, acute/chronic infections, and liver/kidney dysfunctions.

It’s recommended for:

  • Chronic hepatitis, severe liver damage;
  • Frequent respiratory issues (sinusitis, otitis, tonsillitis, asthma), meningitis;
  • Persistent diarrhea, malabsorption;
  • Ataxia-telangiectasia;
  • Lymphatic cancers (leukemias, lymphomas, myelomas, reticulosarcomas);
  • Autoimmune issues: rheumatoid arthritis, SLE, dermatomyositis;
  • Anaphylactic reactions post-transfusion.

How Total IgA Testing Is Performed

Venous blood is drawn on an empty stomach. A light dinner is allowed the evening prior, but avoid alcohol and smoking hours before.

With low levels, prevent infection and monitor health post-collection.

With elevated levels, report bone pain, spontaneous fractures, high calcium, or renal insufficiency signs to the doctor immediately.

Processing Time for Total IgA Testing

Determining total IgA takes about 4 hours.
