What is Lupus Anticoagulant Testing
Lupus anticoagulant is an IgG-class immunoglobulin produced during autoimmune processes.
This anticoagulant neutralizes phospholipids and phospholipid-protein complexes, impacting blood clotting.
This disruption causes intense thrombus formation, hindering normal blood circulation.
Antiphospholipid syndrome isn’t the only risk with a positive lupus anticoagulant result; thrombosis may lead to thromboembolism. Positive results are common in AIDS patients or pregnant women at high risk of miscarriage or fetal death.
Indications for Lupus Anticoagulant Testing
Testing is recommended for:
- Venous and arterial thrombosis (early/recurrent);
- Thromboembolism signs;
- Ischemic strokes;
- Circulatory disorders.
It’s also indicated for women planning pregnancy to assess miscarriage or fetal death risks.
Since lupus anticoagulant testing isn’t definitive and various factors may affect results, additional tests for antiphospholipid IgM/IgG antibodies, anti-cardiolipin antibodies, and total IgG in serum are advised.
How Lupus Anticoagulant Testing Is Conducted
General guidelines:
- Test on an empty stomach, with the last meal 8 hours prior;
- Avoid physical exertion and alcohol;
- To prevent false positives, stop coumarin drugs two weeks before and heparin two days prior.
A specialist draws venous blood. After applying a rubber tourniquet, the patient clenches and releases their fist to optimize blood flow. The procedure takes about five minutes.
A positive result indicates low, moderate, or high lupus anticoagulant concentration; a negative result means it’s undetectable.
