IgG – the primary blood isotope in humans, a component of humoral immunity.
General Information
IgG immunoglobulins quantitatively dominate all immunoglobulin types. They emerge upon secondary antigen contact. In women, these isotopes penetrate the endothelium and placenta, conferring passive immunity to newborns.
In children, IgG is the primary defense for the first nine weeks of life.
Elevated levels occur with purulent infections, sarcoidosis, autoimmune diseases, chronic liver conditions, cystic fibrosis, parasitic infections, HIV, asymptomatic monoclonal gammopathy, multiple myeloma, and chronic granulomatosis.
IgG decreases with:
- Lymphoproliferative diseases;
- Splenectomy;
- Blood protein reduction in nephro- and enteropathies;
- Ionizing radiation exposure;
- Allergic disease development;
- Transient hypogammaglobulinemia or muscular dystrophy;
- Suspected HIV, Bruton’s disease, or Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome.
