Otoplasty (ear plastic surgery) is a surgical procedure aimed at correcting the ears. The operation affects both the soft and cartilaginous tissues of the ear.

General information

Plastic surgeries aimed at changing the shape of the ears are a fairly popular type of surgical intervention. Otoplasty offers a fairly wide range of options: it can be used to correct the shape of the auricle itself, as well as the earlobe. The main types of otoplasty include:

  • aesthetic. It is suitable for adult patients. The purpose of this procedure is to correct the shape of the ears to make them more aesthetically pleasing;
  • reconstructive. It is used to correct various defects. Most often, this type is used to correct congenital pathologies and correct the consequences of various types of injuries.

Sometimes it is enough to remove excess skin tissue so that the ears fit more tightly to the head, but most often the plastic surgeon has to work on such complex issues as the symmetry of the ears, the shape and size of the auricle itself.

The type of surgery depends on the individual characteristics of the patient.

Procedure

Preparation

A consultation with a surgeon is necessary, during which the patient can express all his wishes. Before the operation, you need to undergo a comprehensive examination, including a blood test for coagulation, an analysis for infectious diseases such as HIV infection, hepatitis, etc.

The list of diagnostic procedures will be determined by the plastic surgeon.

The procedure for performing ear plastic surgery

In most cases, otoplasty is performed under local anesthesia, but sometimes general anesthesia is used, in which case observation of the operation and control of the patient's condition by an experienced anesthesiologist-resuscitator is required. On average, the operation lasts about an hour, but sometimes it can take longer if the procedure is complex. During otoplasty, the plastic surgeon makes an incision in the place where the ear is adjacent to the head. By removing cartilage and skin tissue from there, the surgeon achieves a change in the position of the ears in relation to the head. If necessary, the auricle itself and the earlobe are also affected. Rehabilitation period The next four days after the procedure, it is necessary to wear a special and quite specific-looking bandage, resembling a turban. The head should not be washed for a week. The stitches are removed after 10 days, and swelling will be visible for another two weeks.

Indications

Aesthetic and reconstructive otoplasty of the ears is performed at the request of the patient to get rid of the consequences of certain injuries or congenital defects.

Contraindications

Poor blood clotting, infectious diseases (including HIV, for example), as well as severe somatic illnesses are contraindications to this procedure.

Complications

There are a number of complications associated with the operation, including:

  • getting into the wound infections;
  • bleeding;
  • allergy to anesthesia;
  • unsatisfactory result (for example, asymmetry of the ears, which becomes noticeable during the recovery process).
