Treatment of hyperhidrosis is a set of measures aimed at stopping and preventing excessive sweating. It can be either conservative or performed through surgery.

General information

Normal sweating is a natural and vital function of the human skin. With hyperhidrosis, this function is pathologically enhanced. Any stress, even minimal, with this pathological disorder can lead to profuse sweating. Moreover, there is a strong connection with the psychological state. For example, if a person is embarrassed by sweaty palms, then knowing about the upcoming handshake, he will only worry more, and this will inevitably provoke even more sweating. From the point of view of physiologists, this is a vicious circle.

However, hyperhidrosis is curable. There are two main approaches to treating this disease:

  • a conservative method, which includes rules of prevention and therapeutic methods of influencing the body;
  • a surgical method, which involves direct intervention in the functioning of the body.

The choice of treatment method largely depends on the cause of the disease. Among the main ones it is worth listing:

  • pathological conditions of the endocrine system, including hyperthyroidism and diabetes;
  • neurological diseases, such as Parkinson's disease and vegetative-vascular dystonia;
  • the occurrence of neoplasms;
  • genetic diseases;
  • infectious diseases, such as AIDS and tuberculosis.

If hyperhidrosis is caused by a separate disease, then, first of all, it is necessary to cure it by seeking help from an infectious disease specialist, endocrinologist or other specialized specialist.

The process of the procedure

Preparation

First of all, it is necessary to accurately determine the root of the problem. Symptoms of hyperhidrosis can also occur with mental disorders. Then you should first undergo treatment with a psychologist.

Then you should decide on a method of treating hyperhidrosis, if it has been diagnosed.

Hyperhidrosis treatment procedure

If we talk about a conservative approach, it is divided into a number of methods that are used in combination. The patient should follow a diet, excluding caffeine-containing products from the diet. You should wash often and wear only clothes that do not restrict movement.

As a therapeutic treatment, a dermatologist prescribes special drugs for oral administration (for example, cold-blocking medications) and recommends certain methods of local action.

An excellent method of action in the treatment of hyperhidrosis is electrophoresis, in which ionizing substances penetrate the skin using an electric current. A completely non-invasive procedure, effective and safe.

Surgical intervention is usually of three types:

  • introduction of botulinum toxins, which poison and therefore reduce the rate of work of the sweat glands;
  • treatment of hyperhidrosis of the armpits occurs through excision of glandular tissue there;
  • clipping or exposure to electricity during endoscopic sympathectomy, affecting the nerve trunk.

Rehabilitation period

In the case of surgical intervention, rehabilitation may be required from one or two days (for minimally invasive sympathectomy) to several weeks - for more traumatic types of operations.

Indications

Hyperhidrosis requires a narrowly targeted type of treatment if it is not a consequence of a particular disease.

Contraindications

Contraindications depend on the specific case, and taking them into account, the dermatologist selects a course of treatment. However, there is a list of general contraindications that apply to injection treatment:

  • pregnancy and lactation;
  • oncological diseases;
  • intolerance to drugs;
  • hemophilia;
  • epilepsy.

Complications

Possible complications depend on how strong the impact on the body was and which internal systems were affected. Thus, electrophoresis may cause dry skin on the palms, while sympathectomy is dangerous due to pneumothorex and hemothorex during surgery.

Prices and clinics

Hyperhidrosis treatment is carried out by all medical institutions where a dermatologist practices. However, not all clinics can provide a full range of services.
