Sympathectomy. Prices, reviews, ratings
General information
Hyperhidrosis is an unpleasant pathological disease characterized by excessive sweating. Usually, they try to combat this problem with therapeutic methods. If they are ineffective, then one of two surgical methods is used. Both of them are aimed at blocking the signal of the sympathetic nervous system, which makes the sweat glands work. Here are these methods:
- sympathectomy, an operation to directly block the nerve trunks;
- injections of a special botulinum-type toxin or Botox. In this case, the effect is chemical.
The second method is preferable, since it does not have any toxic effect on the body.
Modern sympathectomy is performed endoscopically. There are two possible approaches to interrupting the signal from the sympathetic nervous system:
- the so-called electrodestruction is a destructive effect of electric current on the nerve trunk;
- clipping the nerve trunk (the surgeon compresses the trunk during the operation, which allows the nerve signal to be interrupted).
Procedure
Preparation
The patient must undergo diagnostics of the state of blood clotting (take blood tests), it is also necessary to accurately determine the presence of the diagnosis, since hyperhidrosis is sometimes more of a psychological problem. General anesthesia is used.
Sympathectomy procedure
During the surgical intervention, the surgeon makes a number of punctures. A camera with a light source is inserted through one of them. It transmits an image of what is happening to the surgeon, giving him the opportunity to refuse large-scale excision of the patient's body in order to get to the nerve trunk. The instruments with which the surgeon will affect the nerve trunk are inserted through other holes: either with a clip or an electrode. The operation gives very high reliability results with relatively low invasiveness.
Clipping is preferable, since it gives a chance to restore the functioning of the nerve trunk if complications are detected. When the trunk is exposed to electricity, the damage is irreparable.
Rehabilitation period
Rehabilitation does not last long, since significant penetration and destruction of the tissues of the body near the nerve trunk does not occur. Single sutures are often used, which do not even leave scars.
Complications
This procedure is very effective, but sometimes complications may occur. As a rule, they depend on the quality of the operation performed and in most cases are removed either by postoperative care or additional treatment. Complications include:
- increased sweating in some areas of the body, which occurs because the body tries to compensate for the impact of the operation, which it considers as damage;
- pain syndrome, which, as a rule, goes away after a few days;
- pneumothorax and hemothorax - that is, the ingress of air and blood into the pleural cavity.
Indications
Sympathectomy is a relatively narrowly specialized procedure, the main indication for which is excessive sweating. But it is used as a last resort.
Contraindications
This operation is strictly not recommended for men on the lumbar region, as it can cause impotence. In addition, contraindications to this operation are:
- tuberculosis;
- pleurisy;
- pulmonary or heart failure.
Prices and clinics
This surgical procedure, although minimally invasive in its modern form, is quite complex in terms of implementation. The surgeon must have experience working with specific equipment. Therefore, not every clinic provides the opportunity to carry out this operation within its walls. The cost of sympathectomy is quite high, but different medical institutions require different amounts.
