X-ray is a special type of radiation that has the property of passing through the body at the speed of light.

General information

X-rays can be harmful, but its benefits in medicine are obvious. This method of examination is used in cases where it can bring much more benefit than harm. A child's body is more sensitive than an adult's, so some parents refuse to have an X-ray done on their child. But there are situations when it is unavoidable.

Radiation is dangerous if its impact exceeds a certain threshold. If this is not observed, then there is no need to talk about the harm of ionizing radiation.

Everyone who has undergone an X-ray examination has a special radiation passport, which notes all doses of radiation received. But the patient or his parents must monitor whether the permissible limit is exceeded themselves, since each doctor purposefully solves his own problems. A surgeon, for example, may need an X-ray of a broken arm, a traumatologist - of the back to identify curvatures, and a pediatrician will refer you for a lung examination. Another danger is to do X-rays on children for a fee, without a doctor's prescription, since you can exceed the permissible level of radiation.

Currently, X-rays are done on children using classical and digital methods. Digital technologies have a significant advantage, but this diagnostics is only carried out in private clinics, state medical institutions are limited in funds to purchase expensive equipment. Modern technologies have made it possible to significantly reduce the dose load and improve image quality.

Parents often wonder at what age children can have X-rays. It is used only in the presence of special indications, starting from infancy. It should only be taken into account that the benefit from it should outweigh the risk.

Procedure

Preparation

The small patient must be placed on a special stand and provided with the necessary position. If the child is too small to remain in the desired position, then fixators are used. If the diagnostic method takes a long period of time, then a sedative or anesthesia can be used. Such fixation helps to obtain a high-quality image and reduce the likelihood of repeating the examination. Parents should explain how an X-ray is done to their child and reassure them.

X-rays for children

During the session, special covers containing lead are used. They are used to protect the eyes, thyroid gland, genitals and other organs. For newborns and infants, the entire body is covered, except for the area being examined.

Indications

X-ray examination is used in dentistry, for diseases of the genitourinary system (often can be replaced by ultrasound), abdominal organs, gastrointestinal tract, chest, hip joints. But none of them are prescribed without special indications.

Contraindications

Preventive fluorography, which adults undergo once a year, is prescribed to children only for special medical indications. Ionizing radiation has a detrimental effect on a growing organism, increasing the risk of somatic and genetic defects by 2-3 times.

X-ray diagnostics is not recommended for seriously ill people, with pulmonary-pleural hemorrhage and open pneumothorax.

Contrast radiography is contraindicated in active tuberculosis, thyroid pathologies, decompensated diabetes mellitus, renal and hepatic diseases and sensitivity to contrast agents.

Complications

Complications are usually caused by radiography using contrast fluids. They manifest themselves in the form of acute respiratory failure, pathological changes in internal organs, collapse, embolism, and heart problems.

Negative consequences of exposure to large doses of ionizing radiation on a child's body, whose cells are growing, can be damage to the DNA chain, its mutation. In adults, cells no longer grow, so this radiation has little effect on them.
