Chest X-rays are used more often than other similar procedures for children. They can be used to obtain images of the heart, lungs, large vessels, sternum bones, spine, and to diagnose pneumonia, cancer, emphysema, and other diseases, and to monitor their progress.

General information

X-ray is a procedure using electromagnetic waves, the result of which is a picture of individual areas of the body, reflecting defects or their absence.

For adults negative impact radiation is safe if you do not exceed the permissible annual dose.

Such radiation has a more negative effect on a child's body, since actively dividing cells are more susceptible to mutations and DNA chain breaks.

X-rays have penetrating ability and can pass through many objects. Diagnostics are carried out on a special device that emits rays that pass through a person and are reflected on a matrix or film. The image is obtained due to the fact that different parts of the body absorb them differently, soft tissues partially pass through, and bones mainly capture them. Therefore, on an X-ray, the skeletal structure is reflected in white, soft formations - in shades of gray, and air cavities - in black.

A referral is issued for shortness of breath, chest pain, cough, after injuries, with causeless fever. A repeat examination may be required if there are doubts about their reliability, with poor visualization, to study the dynamics.

Procedure

Preparation

Chest X-ray for a child does not require preparation, but it is worth taking a toy with you to calm the child, and a diaper if he cannot stand yet. During the procedure, you need to bare your torso and remove jewelry, hairpins, belts and other metal products. Images are needed in direct and lateral projection. In the first case, the child's shoulders and pelvis are pressed against the surface of the device, and in the second, the patient is positioned sideways with his arms raised up.

If the child is already old enough, he will be asked to remain still and hold his breath for a couple of seconds, this will improve the quality of the image. Infants and newborns are placed on a special table, and the specialist tries to take a picture at the right moment, monitoring the breathing rhythm. The areas of the body that are not being studied are covered with a lead apron.

The same device can be put on by the accompanying person who is next to the baby to provide him with support if he is still too small. The examination is painless. X-ray vibrations penetrate the body, determining the centers of pathology, and special devices display the image. The entire process takes no more than 15 minutes.

Now the images are available as digital files and are stored on electronic media. They are easy to find and compare with previous results.

Indications

The following symptoms should raise concern: chest and heart pain, shortness of breath, lack of air, arrhythmia, swelling, high blood pressure, sternum injuries, suspected pneumonia or tumors, contact with tuberculosis patients, positive Mantoux reaction. The referral is issued by a doctor.

Contraindications

Chest X-ray has some limitations. It cannot be used in patients with bleeding or sternum injury. In addition, it does not always allow determining the condition of internal organs, which complicates diagnosis, so other methods are used.

Complications

Contact with the cold surface of the device and the need to stand still cause certain discomfort to the baby. Although modern equipment makes it possible to establish control over the radiation dose and reduce scattering so that organs that are not being studied are exposed to the least influence, but with excessive exposure to rays, the risk of developing malignant neoplasms remains.
