Laryngoscopy is a diagnostic method that allows visual examination and assessment of the condition of the mucous membrane of the larynx and vocal cords. It is performed when there is a suspicion of inflammatory and tumor pathologies, the presence of foreign bodies or congenital abnormalities in the structure of the organ. The procedure is performed using modern devices - laryngoscopes, which are inserted into the throat and equipped with devices for providing emergency care in the event of complications.

Indirect laryngoscopy

The technique is based on the use of mirrors. The patient is seated on a chair, after which he needs to open his mouth wide, sticking out his tongue. To prevent vomiting during the insertion of the device, the nasopharynx is sprayed with an anesthetic solution. Then the otolaryngologist lowers a mirror into the larynx, which reflects the light from the laryngoscope, and uses it to examine the throat and vocal cords. The image is displayed upside down. The procedure itself lasts about 5 minutes.

Direct laryngoscopy

A more popular method that allows for a thorough examination. It is carried out using a flexible or rigid laryngoscope.

In the first case, the patient is prepared in the same way as in the indirect method - they are asked to take a "sitting" position, after which the mucous membrane of the pharynx is treated with an antiseptic solution. After this, vasoconstrictor drops are instilled into the nostrils so as not to damage the mucous tissue during the insertion of the device. A laryngoscope is lowered into the nose, with the help of which the larynx is examined.

In the second case, the procedure is carried out under anesthesia. The examination with a rigid laryngoscope is more complex and lengthy, but it allows not only to examine the organs in detail, but also to carry out some manipulations (remove material for biopsy, remove foreign bodies, polyps, papillomas, perform laser therapy). In addition, this is one of the most common methods for diagnosing laryngeal cancer.

The examination takes up to half an hour due to the complexity of the procedure. After this, the person must remain under the doctor's supervision for another hour. To prevent the patient from developing laryngeal edema, an ice compress is used. Drinking and eating are prohibited for 2 hours, otherwise an attack of suffocation may occur. If a biopsy was taken during the procedure, a cough with sputum and a small amount of blood clots may occur. After a couple of days, all side effects disappear.

Laryngoscopy of the throat: indications

The doctor may prescribe the procedure for:

  • Various injuries to the larynx;
  • Cough with sputum containing blood;
  • Voice problems (dysphonia and aphonia);
  • Suspected obstruction of the airways;
  • Sensation of a foreign body in the throat;
  • Difficulty in the passage of food.

Laryngoscopy of the larynx: preparation

Before performing direct laryngoscopy, the doctor collects an anamnesis from the patient, during which he finds out what drugs he took, whether he has any allergies to medications, heart disease, problems with blood clotting. The fact of pregnancy is necessarily found out, because the procedure is carried out under general anesthesia. You cannot drink or eat for 8 hours before the examination.

Before indirect laryngoscopy, you are prohibited from eating or drinking to avoid vomiting during the insertion of the device. Also, before the examination, dentures are removed from the oral cavity (if any).

Laryngoscopy for children

Pediatric otolaryngology involves the use of a direct method using a flexible or rigid laryngoscope. This is due to the fact that indirect laryngoscopy is characterized by significant technical difficulties, and it will be difficult for a small child to withstand them. In general, the examination of children is no different from work with adults: the same devices are used and the same manipulations are carried out. Preparation for the procedure and the results of its implementation are also similar.

Where to get a laryngoscopy

The examination can be done in almost all medical centers of the city. However, the issue of choosing an institution must be approached with all responsibility. First of all, do not rush to make an appointment with doctors who offer their services at a big discount. Often, this is due to unprofessionalism, lack of experience, or the use of old or low-quality equipment. It is better to overpay slightly in a good clinic and receive excellent service than to save money and regret it, having subsequently received a number of complications.

Laryngoscopy: reviews and conclusions

Laryngoscopy is one of the most informative studies that allows you to quickly assess the condition of the larynx. With its help, you can quickly diagnose the presence of certain pathologies, as well as collect biomaterial and remove foreign bodies.

If the procedure is aimed exclusively at visual inspection, then it takes very little time (no more than 10 minutes). If additional manipulations are necessary, the duration increases to half an hour.

In general, laryngoscopy is performed without complications for the patient. However, it also happens that certain difficulties arise associated with the individual reaction of the body to external intervention. There is a risk of edema or respiratory dysfunction. This is especially true for people with a strong inflammatory process or with tumor formations. Also, bleeding or injury to the mucous membrane may sometimes occur. However, this happens extremely rarely.
