Tonometry is the measurement of pressure inside the eye. Intraocular pressure (IOP) is the effect of intraocular fluid on the cornea and sclera. Increased IOP leads to diseases, discomfort in the eye area, headaches and vision loss (in advanced cases).

General information

Eye tonometry is performed to diagnose diseases of the visual organs. Tonometry can be used to detect such a dangerous disease as glaucoma.

Increased IOP leads to diseases, unpleasant sensations in the eye area, headaches and loss of vision (in advanced cases).

Methodology and technology of the procedure

By type of examination, there are several methods for measuring IOP:

  • Non-contact tonometry. It is used in cases where direct impact on the eyes is impossible for medical or other reasons.
  • Finger tonometry. It is carried out directly with the doctor's fingertips. It requires experience and a certain professionalism of the doctor.
  • Maklakov's method. The most effective and frequently used.
  • Goldman's method. The most accurate diagnostic method.

Procedure

Preparation

Before undergoing tonometry, the patient should consult an ophthalmologist. Do not drink alcoholic beverages. Try not to engage in heavy physical labor and sports immediately before the procedure.

Process of tonometry

The process of tonometry is carried out differently, depending on the methods used by the ophthalmologist:

  • With non-contact tonometry, the cornea is exposed to a directed air flow, and the reaction is read by a special device. But it is worth noting that this method is not the most accurate.
  • Finger tonometry can be performed by direct palpation of the eyeball (after anesthesia) or through the patient's eyelids. Using the pads of the index fingers, first press on one eye, then on the other. After this, the ophthalmologist makes a conclusion about the degree of hardness of the eyeball. As a rule, tonometry is performed on both eyes for comparison.
  • When using the Maklakov method, a special tonometer, which is a weight, is placed on the eyes. The weights are pre-soaked in paint. The tonometer is removed and the IOP is determined based on the paint residue.
  • Before tonometry is performed using the Goldman method, the patient is given anesthetic and fluorescein drops. The tonometer head is illuminated with blue light. The handle of the device with the scale is turned so that both semicircles of colored tears, visible through the tonometer prism, touch at the edges. Then the scale readings are read.
Tonometry is performed twice a day - in the morning and in the evening. Daily tonometry of the eye allows the ophthalmologist to assess fluctuations in IOP.

It is important to note that in the presence of a disease, the difference in readings will be significantly higher than in healthy people. The data obtained will allow the doctor to more accurately diagnose the disease, prescribe the correct treatment or prevention.

Indications

The tonometry procedure is recommended:

  • for pain or burning in the eyes;
  • patients over 40 years of age;
  • if there is a predisposition to glaucoma;
  • for diseases of the cardiovascular and endocrine systems;
  • for neuralgia.

Contraindications

Contraindications to tonometry may be:

  • allergy;
  • eye diseases (viral or bacterial);
  • corneal pathology.

Non-contact eye tonometry has no contraindications.

Who conducts it and where?

Eye tonometry is performed in all ophthalmological clinics. You can contact both public and private centers. The site offers you a list of clinics where the tonometry procedure is performed. On this medical portal you will find descriptions of clinics, information about opening hours, location, as well as the cost of tonometry.
