General information
Myelography of the spine or other parts of the body makes it possible to identify pathological changes and determine their malignant nature. Radiography is considered a common technique. It is less invasive and allows for a quick diagnosis. In addition, the radiation dose is also minimal. It does not cause significant harm to human health.
The equipment provides an accurate image (myelogram) of the nerve roots and endings, vertebrae and the subarachnoid space.

Procedure
Preparation
First, the doctor asks the patient about medication intake, hereditary and acquired diseases. The specialist conducts allergy tests.
It is also necessary to limit the use of antipsychotic and insulin-containing substances, antidepressants, as well as drugs that thin the blood.
You should stop eating 6-8 hours before. You should remove all metal objects and jewelry (hairpins, pins, earrings, brooches, dentures, glasses, lenses). For the session, you need to change into special clothes (in most cases, this is a robe).
Myelography procedure
To perform the manipulation, you need a table, an X-ray tube, a monitor, a medical kit, and a fluoroscope. The latter allows you to convert radiation into a video image. An image reading amplifier is located above the monitor screen.
The patient takes a position on the table face down. A contrast agent is injected into the spinal canal at the level of the lower lumbar spine. In rare cases, implantation can be performed in the upper cervical region.
The puncture site is treated with an antiseptic for disinfection and anesthetic is administered. During the puncture, the client turns on his side, stomach. If necessary, fluid is removed for analysis. After this, the patient returns to his previous position.
The device tilts the table to distribute the contrast material. After completion, the specialist studies the finished photographs.
Rehabilitation period
It is not advisable to leave the hospital immediately. Recovery comes down to the following rules:
- quit smoking and drinking alcohol;
- stay in bed;
- limit sports and heavy lifting;
- bandage the wound;
- drink plenty of cold liquids.
Indications
Contrast myelography is typical for detecting:
- signs of compression of nerve formations, herniated disc;
- stenosis, degeneration of soft tissue or bones;
- narrowing of the spinal canal, proliferation of integuments;
- osteophytes (spurs), thickening ligaments.
Myelography is prescribed for the following diagnoses:
- vertebral tumors or spinal cord membranes;
- infection and inflammation of soft tissues, spine or disc;
- trauma.
Contraindications
Prohibited or limited for those who:
- cannot remain still;
- epilepsy, seizures, anatomical defects of body structure.
Complications
Failure to comply with the methodology may result in the following consequences:
- hematomas, swelling and bruises;
- injuries;
- progress of acute or chronic inflammation;
- heart rhythm disturbances;
- stroke, myocardial infarction.
