Laminectomy. Prices, reviews, ratings
General information
Spinal laminectomy is an operation that allows for effective, without consequences, removal of the vertebral arches. It can be performed as an independent operation or as one of the stages of another procedure. The latter option is extremely rare today, thanks to the development of technology and medicine.
The goal of decompressive laminectomy is to eliminate the pressure of the vertebra on the nerve roots. The operation leads to the formation of a free space near the nerve. This helps to normalize the blood supply to the damaged area, all metabolic processes and the disappearance of pain.
To perform a laminectomy, it is necessary to first conduct an X-ray contrast study of the spine.
At the same time, the surgeon can remove such pathological formations as osteophytes, scars, intervertebral disc herniations, which also cause compression of both the nerves and the entire spinal cord. It is possible to perform manipulations to stabilize the spinal column.
Procedure
Preparation
Preparation for surgery involves taking the following tests and examinations:
- biochemical blood test;
- coagulogram;
- liver function assessment;
- electrocardiogram;
- chest X-ray;
- computer tomography.
If you have concomitant diseases, you need to consult with the appropriate specialists.
It is forbidden to drink or eat six hours before the surgery. Immediately before the procedure, you must remove all jewelry, false teeth and clothing. It is advisable not to smoke or chew gum. The anesthesiologist connects a drip with sedatives.
Laminectomy procedure
Laminectomy is performed under general anesthesia. Its duration is from one to three hours (depending on the complexity of the disorders). The area of the future incision is disinfected with an alcohol solution.
Laminectomy surgery is performed in the lumbar region. It can be performed on several vertebrae at once. The technique is to provide access to the required vertebra. Then, its arches or some part of them are resected. During the operation, the facet joints, which are located above the nerve roots, are cut.
Along with decompressive laminectomy, its variant is possible in the form of:
- Interlaminar laminectomy. The doctor performs only a partial resection of the yellow ligament, as well as adjacent areas of the arches of adjacent vertebrae. It is performed when the intervertebral disc has fallen out.
- Bone-plastic laminectomy. This procedure involves subsequent closure of the defect in the spinal canal using an autograft.
- Exploratory or trial laminectomy. This type of surgery is performed to clarify the degree and nature of the violation of the contents of the vertebral canal.
Rehabilitation period
Upon completion of the procedure, the patient is transferred to the postoperative ward, where he must remain at rest for two hours. During this time, the patient recovers from anesthesia. After this, the patient is transferred to the ward and a catheter is connected to drain urine for a day (depending on age, the rest period can be increased). After a day, he is allowed to get out of bed on his own. If the patient feels well, he/she is discharged on the second or third day.
It is forbidden to engage in physical work for two weeks after this procedure.
Indications and contraindications
This procedure is prescribed in the following situations:
- narrowing of the spinal canal, intervertebral hernias;
- osteophyte formation, intermittent claudication, tumor and adhesive process;
- thickening of the yellow ligament, impaired sensitivity and mobility of the body;
- dysfunction of the pelvic organs.
Contraindications
Contraindications to this procedure are:
- infectious and inflammatory diseases;
- respiratory and cardiac failure;
- diabetes mellitus, pregnancy;
- poor blood clotting.
Complications
Possible consequences:
- wound infection;
- bleeding;
- damage to the spinal cord and its membranes.
Who conducts and where?
