Cerebral angiography is an effective method of cardiology. It can be used to find the area of blockage, location of a thrombus, tumor or vascular stenosis, determine the degree of aneurysm, bleeding and other pathologies.

General information

Angiography of the cerebral vessels consists of an X-ray examination with the introduction of a contrast agent (iodine).

It is rational to use it in case of stenosis or occlusion, as well as for detection of atherosclerotic defects, in case of heart disease, kidney disease, to detect cysts or tumors, aneurysms and shunts. It is often a preparatory stage before performing an intervention in the heart, brain.

Based on the results, a decision is made on the need for surgery, the introduction of a stent or the installation of a foreign body (occlusive balloon, implant, pacemaker).

The session lasts about an hour.

Procedure

Preparation

First, the doctor prescribes allergy tests. If it is positive, the patient feels a cough, rashes, and itchy irritations.

You must eat 8-10 hours before the procedure and avoid taking medications that have not been agreed upon with a specialist.

Immediately before the session, you must remove any metal objects from your body and put on protective clothing (a gown).

Cerebral Vessel Angiography Procedure

The doctor injects a substance to stain the lymph vessels, veins, capillaries, and arteries. They begin to glow, and any structural changes can be clearly seen on the image.

The technique consists of the following stages:

  • First, a catheter device in the form of a plastic tube is inserted into the selected vessel. The introduction can occur through the femoral, carotid or vertebral artery using anesthesia and disinfection.
  • The agent is gradually pumped in several doses (no more than 4) and a full picture of natural blood circulation is observed.
  • The catheter is removed and the puncture is pressed to prevent bruising and effusion. After this, a sterile bandage is applied.

Rehabilitation period

The patient must be under observation for six hours. Recovery comes down to the following restrictive measures:

  • refrain from driving for 24 hours, smoking and drinking alcohol;
  • bandage and do not leave the wound open;
  • drink plenty of cold liquids;
  • stay in bed;
  • do not lift heavy objects, do not take a bath or shower, and do not exercise.

Indications

The therapy is typical for people who have complaints of:

  • headache, dizziness;
  • pain in the neck, constant nausea;
  • fainting and loss of consciousness.

It is also prescribed in:

  • assessment of venous outflow, malformations, collaterals;
  • ischemia, hemorrhage;
  • oncological diseases.

Contraindications

Prohibited in the following diagnoses:

  • mental disorder, inflammatory or acute forms of diseases;
  • severe renal, hepatic or cardiac insufficiency;
  • severe stages of diseases;
  • allergy (not only to iodine solutions and components);
  • thrombophlebitis.

Complications

Failure to comply with the technology may result in the following consequences:

  • swelling, small hematomas and bruises;
  • progression of inflammation;
  • heart rhythm disturbances or its increase;
  • myocardial infarction, stroke.
