Rheoencephalography is a non-invasive method for examining the cerebral vascular system for blood flow disorders.
Rheoencephalography is a non-invasive method for examining the vascular system of the brain for blood flow disorders.

General information

Rheoencephalography (REG) is based on recording the values of electrical resistance of tissues that change under the influence of a weak high-frequency electric current.

The technique allows you to obtain accurate data on vessels of the brain: their reactivity, tone, elasticity of the walls, as well as blood filling and peripheral vascular resistance.

The advantage of this diagnostic method is:

  • relative simplicity;
  • obtaining separate information about intracerebral vessels, venous and arterial systems.

Rheographs are used to conduct the examination.

Procedure

Preparation

Preparation for REG consists of degreasing the skin with alcohol to ensure reliable attachment of the electrodes and fixing them with rubber bands, strands or special adhesive pastes.

Six electrodes are sufficient for the procedure, which are placed on the frontal, occipital part of the head and on the mammillary processes on both sides.

Rheoencephalography procedure

The rheograph consists of a high-frequency current generator, a measuring bridge, an amplifier, a detector, and a recording device. After securing the electrodes and turning on the rheograph, information is recorded. The result is provided in the form of a rheogram, deciphered immediately.

A single REG wave includes anacrotic and catacrotic parts. Normally, the first should be shorter and steeper, the second - flat and long.

The catacrotic part has a dicrotic tooth, which consists of a peak and a depression. The complete complex is called a diastolic wave.

In case of pathologies, the curves change as follows:

  • Increased tone – decreased amplitude, the peak of the systolic wave is flattened, the diastolic wave is shifted toward the peak. When the tone decreases, the rheogram changes in the opposite direction.
  • Venous outflow is difficult - the curve becomes dome-shaped.
  • With venous hypotension, a pre-systolic wave appears before the systolic wave.

Indications

Transcranial magnetic stimulation is typical for those people who have:

  • specific abnormalities of the spinal cord and brain;
  • motor neuron pathologies, hereditary diseases and disorders, including cerebrovascular;
  • degeneration, glioblastoma of both or cerebral hemispheres;
  • discogenic compression, pyramidal syndrome;
  • lesions of the central nervous system, multiple sclerosis;
  • vascular diseases and tumors in the head.

It is also relevant for children of virtually any age due to. Most often, these are one-year-old babies and the younger group aged 3 to 12 years. The session provides an opportunity to conduct comprehensive examinations for various forms of cerebral palsy.

Contraindications

There are no contraindications.

Complications

Cases of complications after rheoencephalography of the brain have not been recorded.
