β-CrossLaps is a test designed to measure the level of C-terminal telopeptides, which are formed when type I collagen is broken down.
The β-CrossLaps assay is a test designed to measure the levels of C-terminal telopeptides, which are formed when type I collagen is broken down.

General information

Beta-CrossLaps blood serum is a degradation product of type I collagen, which makes up more than 90% of the organic bone matrix. Normally, small fragments of collagen formed during its degradation enter the blood and are excreted by the kidneys with urine. Their concentration has a circadian rhythm: maximum values are observed at midnight.

<pThe Beta-CrossLaps indicator is determined to assess the risk of occurrence, as well as to determine the presence of a disease such as osteoporosis, to conduct hormone replacement therapy or to assess how effective antiresorptive therapy is. <pThe marker is determined before treatment has begun and again after six months.

Procedure

Preparation

Before the examination, the patient must:

  • not eat for twelve hours;
  • avoid any emotional stress or physical activity for half an hour;
  • do not smoke for half an hour before the test.

β-CrossLaps Determination Procedure

The procedure involves taking a venous blood sample.

Indications

The manipulations are performed for the purpose of:

  • planning osteoporosis therapy, as well as after six months after the start of treatment;
  • examination of patients with osteoporosis, Paget's disease, bone tissue damage;
  • diagnosis of osteoporosis;
  • assessment of the effectiveness of osteoporosis treatment;
  • diagnosis of chronic renal failure.

Decoding the analysis

The test results should be interpreted taking into account the data of clinical, laboratory and instrumental studies and assessed dynamically.

The analysis has the following reference values:

  • For women under 55 years of age, the indicator is less than 0.573 ng / ml, for women over 55 years of age it is less than 1.008.
  • For men under 50 years of age, the indicator is less than 0.584 ng/ml, at the age of 50 to 70 years - less than 0.704, if a woman is over 70 years old - less than 0.854.

Positive dynamics in the form of a decrease in the crosslaps level can be observed 3 months after the start of treatment, while the densitometric density (ultrasound method) of the bone increases only after 12-24 months.

The absence of a change in the crosslaps level may indicate the ineffectiveness of therapy.
