Protein C test is a laboratory examination of blood samples aimed at determining the concentration of Protein C in the body as a marker of the anticoagulant blood system.
General Information
Protein C is a protein substance formed in the liver. It promotes blood thinning and has anti-inflammatory properties.
Protein C is an anticoagulant that prevents thrombus formation. Its primary function is to control thrombosis, preventing large clots from forming in cases of minor tissue damage (cuts, abrasions).
A thrombus forms after any vessel damage. Physiologically, this process is necessary to stop bleeding. Thus, an insufficient amount of Protein C significantly increases the likelihood of blood clot formation. A deficiency in this protein may also have autosomal dominant properties.
Thrombus formation due to Protein C deficiency can begin at ages 20-30, primarily affecting deep veins and pulmonary arteries. The use of indirect anticoagulants (substances that reduce the activity of blood clotting system components) may trigger skin necrosis – a pathological process involving tissue death in a specific area of the body.
Acquired Protein C deficiency may be due to liver diseases, kidney diseases, or HIV infection.
Indications for Protein C Testing
A screening test for Protein C concentration allows for early detection of substance deficiency. This procedure is primarily necessary for individuals with direct relatives who have a congenital deficiency of this protein. The test is also recommended for women planning conception.
At-risk groups include people who:
- Use hormonal contraceptives;
- Are subject to prolonged immobility (disability, paralysis, illness);
- Are pregnant;
- Have plaster casts on their lower limbs.
How the Protein C Test Is Conducted
The test is not recommended for patients during exacerbations of chronic diseases or while undergoing anticoagulant treatment. Blood is best donated in the morning, always on an empty stomach (approximately 4 hours since the last meal). Alcohol consumption is prohibited before the blood collection procedure, and heavy physical or emotional stress is undesirable.
Reference values:
- Newborns 1-4 days: 17 – 53%;
- 4 days – 4 weeks: 20 – 64%;
- 4 weeks – 12 weeks: 21 – 65%;
- 12 weeks – 6 months: 28 – 80%;
- 6 months – 12 months: 37 – 81%;
- 12 months – 6 years: 40 – 92%;
- 6 years – 10 years: 45 – 93%;
- 10 years – 16 years: 55 – 111%;
- Adults: 70 – 140%
Turnaround Time for the Protein C Test
Results may be ready only after seven working days.
