In any injury, cut, or incision, the body initiates a protective response. It releases hormones, enzymes, and inhibitors into the blood to stop bleeding. A clot forms, sealing the injury site and halting blood loss.

In any injury, cut, or incision, the body initiates a protective response. It releases hormones, enzymes, and inhibitors into the blood to stop bleeding. A clot forms, sealing the injury site and halting blood loss.

General Information

The process of clot formation at an injury site is called coagulation. This mechanism is influenced by numerous factors:

  • Fibrinogen protein content;
  • Presence of the enzyme thrombin;
  • Inhibitor levels;
  • Anticoagulant antithrombin levels.

The qualitative and quantitative characteristics of these substances also play a role.

To determine the timeframe of this process, specialists perform the Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time (APTT) test. This measures the time it takes for a clot to form after combining blood plasma with calcium chloride and other clot-inducing substances at the site of a mechanically damaged blood vessel.

Indications for APTT Testing

The test is ordered:

  • For unexplained bleeding without trauma;
  • Post-myocardial infarction;
  • Before surgical procedures.

Changes in APTT may indicate:

  • Antiphospholipid syndrome;
  • Hemophilia;
  • Disseminated intravascular coagulation syndrome;
  • Reduced blood clotting capacity.

How APTT Testing Is Performed

A specialist collects venous blood. Only plain water is allowed beforehand. The blood sample is placed in a tube with sodium citrate, which binds calcium ions.

The biomaterial is then centrifuged. Kaolin or phospholipids are added to the plasma sample to activate internal clotting.

Next, a calcium chloride solution is introduced. The final step measures the time until a clot forms.

The last meal should be 12 hours before the procedure; smoking and alcohol are prohibited.

Physical exertion is contraindicated 30 minutes prior. Avoid fatty, fried, spicy, or overly salty foods the day before.

Processing Time for APTT Testing

Results are ready the next day.
