NSE (Neuron-Specific Enolase). Prices, Reviews, Ratings
The test for the glycolytic neuron-specific enolase isoenzyme (NSE) determines the level of this substance as a marker of small cell lung cancer and neuroblastoma. The enzyme concentration is primarily observed in brain neurons, and NSE is also present in nervous tissues.

General Information
The purpose of the test is to diagnose and monitor treatment progress, as well as to objectively assess the likelihood of pathology development. Elevated marker concentration in the blood may also indicate the presence of neuroectodermal or neuroendocrine tumors and leukemias in the body’s cells.
The test can provide more accurate results if NSE analysis considers the levels of another independent marker – CEA (carcinoembryonic antigen).
The substance concentration increases with benign tumors, though in such cases, the levels are minimal.
An increase in enzyme levels with non-small cell lung cancer (the most common form of the disease) indicates an aggressively progressing condition.
In some cases, cerebrospinal fluid can be used as the biomaterial for the test, as enzyme levels tend to rise in central nervous system diseases. Such studies are most effective in assessing the extent of post-ischemic brain cell damage. Changes in isoenzyme levels may also indicate other neurological conditions, such as epilepsy.
Indications for NSE Testing
The examination is conducted to monitor the treatment of both types of lung cancer and to assess chemotherapy effectiveness. It is ordered for diagnosis when characteristic symptoms of lung cancer are present: cough, shortness of breath, oral bleeding.
It is also necessary when neuroblastoma symptoms are observed: bone pain, limping, nausea, fatigue, and poor general well-being.
How the NSE Test Is Conducted
To avoid inaccurate results, primary and secondary (if needed) blood collections should be performed at the same medical facility, as laboratories may use different sample analysis methods.
Before the procedure, avoid intense physical or emotional stress, as well as alcohol, tea, and coffee consumption. At least 8-10 hours must pass since the last meal. The test procedure involves the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method.
Turnaround Time for the NSE Test
The test is completed within two working days.
