CA-125 Test – a method to detect the high-molecular-weight glycoprotein CA-125 (Cancer Antigen 125) in blood, a marker for ovarian cancer. It may also indicate other cancers, such as breast, pancreatic, lung, or colon cancer.
General Information
CA-125 concentration is primarily found in endometrial tissues (inner uterine lining) and may be present in uterine mucinous or serous fluid. It enters the bloodstream during menstruation and, occasionally, in early pregnancy.
Elevated glycoprotein levels don’t always indicate cancer, as small amounts may occur in healthy individuals. CA-125 can also be produced with benign tumors, cysts, or during pelvic infections or inflammation.
The CA-125 test is recommended alongside other lab tests.
Additional testing is necessary since the marker is present in only 80% of women with ovarian cancer.
Indications for CA-125 Testing
The test determines cancer stage, confirms its presence/absence, distinguishes benign from malignant tumors, assesses treatment efficacy, and predicts recurrence likelihood.
How the CA-125 Test Is Performed
General patient guidelines: fast before blood draw, avoid food 8-10 hours prior, and exclude fatty/fried foods. Avoid alcohol, energy drinks, and significant exertion beforehand. Report medications to the doctor.
Reference range: 0-35 U/mL.
Low CA-125 suggests positive therapy outcomes. High levels indicate treatment resistance or recurrence.
Processing Time for CA-125 Test
Results are available the next working day.
