Uric acid is an organic substance that is the end product of purine metabolism, which are part of the genomic composition of all cells in the human body.

What is Uric Acid

Uric acid appears after programmed apoptosis or necrosis of cells; a smaller portion enters the body through food (meat, beans, liver, fish) and liquids (beer, wine). Physiologically, the organic substance breaks down in the liver and passes into the urinary system, where 70% is excreted with urine, and 30% enters the gastrointestinal tract and is eliminated with stool. The level depends on the rate of formation, nephrogenic excretion, and redistribution in the body. In extracellular space, uric acid exists as sodium urate. Synonyms include trihydroxypurine, 2,6,8-trioxypurine, and heterocyclic ureide of urea.

Indications

Indications include:

  • Gout;
  • Kidney pathologies and conditions related to nucleoprotein breakdown (nephritis, polycystic kidney disease except hereditary, primary contracted kidney);
  • Acute and chronic renal failure due to renal and post-renal factors;
  • Pernicious anemia, polycythemia, myeloma;
  • Psoriasis, eczema;
  • Infections;
  • Diabetes mellitus, hypoparathyroidism;
  • Tissue breakdown due to purulent processes, necrosis;
  • Radiation and chemotherapy.

How It Is Conducted

A healthcare professional performs a puncture of the cubital vein. Venous blood is collected, and a colorimetric photometric method is used. For three days prior to the test, a low-purine diet must be followed. Additionally, alcohol consumption and smoking are prohibited, and physical exertion should be avoided.

Normal uric acid levels are 120-450 µmol/L (0.30-0.42 mmol/L) for men and 120-380 µmol/L (0.24-0.36 mmol/L) for women.

Turnaround Time

The test is completed within one day. If changes in the indicator are detected, consultation with a doctor (therapist, nephrologist, or family physician) is necessary.
