General Information
C3 is a key complement component (blood plasma protein) that supports the blood’s opsonizing functions and participates in bacterial chemotaxis under chemical stimuli. This component influences phagocytosis and blood cytolysis.
The complement system is a cascade of twenty proteins, acting as plasma enzymes, ensuring the immune system’s response to antibody-antigen interactions. The cascade is activated by antibody-antigen binding, though an alternative pathway exists in medicine, triggered by polysaccharides or immunoglobulins. C3 synthesis occurs in tissues.
Reduced C3 levels in the blood can trigger a range of immune complex and autoimmune diseases (serum sickness, post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis, chronic endocarditis, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis).
A C3 deficiency may contribute to multiple sclerosis, dermatitis, chronic hepatitis, liver cirrhosis, extensive tissue damage, and neuroses.

How C-3 Complement Component Testing Is Conducted
The procedure should be done on an empty stomach, preferably in the morning. The last meal should be 8-10 hours prior; drinking is allowed. A specialist collects venous blood. Before testing, avoid spicy, fatty, fried foods, and alcohol. Refrain from physical exertion the day before and smoking temporarily.
Low levels may indicate viral hepatitis B, Sjögren’s syndrome, short bowel syndrome, or atheroembolic disease.
Testing detects both biologically active and inactive C3 fractions.
