General Information
When foreign agents contact skin, mucosa, or enter the body, protective mechanisms recognize them, eliciting a response. Antigen chemicals align with proteins or polysaccharides, with proteins primarily triggering allergies.
An allergen is a biological substance causing an allergic response in sensitive individuals.
Familial and personal predispositions elevate IgE levels. An exaggerated response to normal allergen exposure, termed atopy, warrants testing total IgE levels. Elevated levels indicate high sensitization to various components. This test measures antibody concentration.
Indications for Total IgE Testing
It assesses atopic tendencies and hyper-IgE syndrome, seen in parasitic infections, aiding diagnosis and severity assessment.
Sensitization varies, with high levels in urticaria, bronchial asthma, seasonal pollinosis, dermatitis, food/drug intolerances, Stevens-Johnson, Lyell’s, Wiskott-Aldrich syndromes, Quincke’s edema, and serum sickness.
Low levels suggest congenital or acquired immunodeficiency or ataxia-telangiectasia.
How Total IgE Testing Is Performed
IgE composition is determined in blood serum via venous draw, ideally on an empty stomach. Avoid overeating, alcohol, and smoking beforehand. Limit physical activity and stress for three days prior. Women should avoid testing during menstruation.
Processing Time for Total IgE Testing
Modern labs offer urgent results within hours; standard time is 1-2 days.
