Foreign microorganisms trigger the immune system to produce protective antibodies – immunoglobulins. These can circulate in the blood 8-10 years post-infection, with concentrations decreasing over time or persisting in low titers lifelong. Their presence doesn’t protect against reinfection.
Acute hepatitis C may be asymptomatic. Untreated, it can become chronic.
Related conditions include liver cirrhosis, hepatic failure, and hepatocellular carcinoma.
The virus enters via blood, potentially from transfusions, organ transplants, or unsterile needles, syringes, or tattoo/piercing equipment.

- Elevated liver enzyme levels (transaminases).
It’s recommended for those with prior hepatitis of unknown etiology, drug addicts, donors, and women planning pregnancy.
How the Hepatitis C (HCV-Ab) Test Is Performed
Follow simple guidelines: last meal 8 hours before venipuncture (water allowed). Stop medications if possible, or inform the doctor of their names and dosages. Avoid alcohol and heavy exertion beforehand.
Post-venipuncture, the sample is placed in a tube with a clotting activator. The site is swabbed with an alcohol-soaked cotton pad. Apply a warming compress if a hematoma forms.
