Intra-articular injections are a highly effective, often auxiliary method of treating diseased joints (connections) by introducing medical preparations there.
Intra-articular injections are a highly effective, often auxiliary method of treating diseased joints (connections) by introducing medications there.
General information
With age, as well as due to other factors, articular cartilage undergoes degenerative processes. Gradually thinning, it loses elasticity and resilience. In addition, the amount of synovial fluid filling the joint cavity decreases. It has the following main functions: lubrication, preventing wear and friction of surfaces; nutrition of cartilage; cushioning; increasing mobility and elasticity.
As a result, diseases develop in which injections are performed into the joint cavity:
- synovitis - inflammation of the synovial membrane;
- bursitis - mucous bag;
- arthritis - directly joints;
- enthesitis - tendons;
- tendinitis - excess calcium in the tendon;
- injuries;
- osteoarthritis - degeneration of cartilage tissue.
Purpose of the procedure:
- pain relief;
- increasing joint mobility;
- restoring elasticity and flexibility;
- slowing down the progress of the main diseases;
- removal of inflammation;
- stimulation of synovial fluid formation.
Procedure
Preparation
The patient is examined and an accurate diagnosis is made. It may be necessary to undergo a diagnostic examination for this: X-ray, magnetic resonance, various tests.
These injections are performed by a vertebroneurologist, orthopedist, surgeon. The procedure requires extensive experience and high professionalism.
Procedure
Injections are performed according to indications in the affected area: knee, hip, shoulder. Medicines used in this case:
- Corticosteroid hormones to reduce pain and inflammation: Kenalog, hydrocortisone, celestone, diprospan, flosteron and others.
- Hyaluronic acid preparations (GCS): ostenil, fermatron, giastat, synocrom, synvisc. GCS replaces intra-articular fluid, "forces" the joint to independently produce hyaluronate. It also protects cartilage from external influences, restores viscosity and shock-absorbing function, slows down its destruction.
- Chondroprotectors (alflutop is a natural remedy) - accelerate metabolism and improve blood circulation.
The number of sessions depends on the severity and stage of the pathology, the age of the patient. On average, this is three to five injections with an interval of 10-14 days. For prevention, with a mild degree of damage, the full course is carried out once; with an average degree - for two to three years; in severe cases – three to four years.
Often intra-articular injections replace surgery and become the only way out in solving such problems, especially when prosthetics are needed.
Indications
- degenerative and dystrophic processes of joints;
- severe pain syndrome;
- infections and inflammations of connective tissues;
- injuries.
Basically, after one or two injections, the patient feels significant relief.
Contraindications
Absolute contraindications to this technique:
- sepsis at the site introduction of a medical product and in surrounding tissues;
- hemophilia;
- severe narrowing of the joint space with severe deformation;
- joint instability;
- bone fracture that does not allow an injection;
- severe osteoporosis.
Relative contraindications:
- severe general condition of the patient;
- lack of positive effect from previous manipulations;
- individual intolerance to any drug.
Complications
Choose a specialist carefully. If the manipulation is carried out professionally, it will not cause any complications.
In case of violation of safety and asepsis rules, the following consequences are possible:
- tissue infection;
- bleeding into the cavity;
- pain.
