Electromyography (EMG) is a method that allows us to study the bioelectrical activity of muscle fibers, myoneural endings and various muscles at rest or during their contraction.

Electromyography (EMG) is a method that allows us to study the bioelectrical activity of muscle fibers, myoneural endings and various muscles at rest or during their contraction.

General information

In medicine, there is a classification of this method. Several types of EMG are used:

  • needle - needle electrodes are inserted, with their help the change in potential in isolated fibers is established;
  • using skin electrodes - allows you to find out the general level of muscle excitation;
  • stimulation - artificial stimulation of nerves or sensory organs, analyzes the transmission of impulses, the speed of conduction of excitation along the nerve and reflex activity.

Possible reasons for prescribing this diagnostic:

  • checking the work of various muscles;
  • determining the source of weakness or pain;
  • identifying muscle and nerve disorders;
  • finding out the causes of cramps.

Process of procedures

Preparation

After consulting with the doctor, the child may have to stop taking certain types of medications for a week:

  • anti-inflammatory drugs;
  • blood thinners.

For 2-3 hours before electromyography, the child should not drink coffee, carbonated drinks or tea. He needs to take a hygienic shower or bath and put on clean, comfortable clothes. In no case should you use various lotions, creams or oils.

You should have an explanatory conversation with the child about how the diagnosis will be carried out, what the doctor will do, what sensations may occur, and also tell him how important it is to do this for his health.

Electromyography for a child

Electromyography is performed on a child in a lying position. Depending on the type of EMG, thin metal plates are applied to the body or a small needle is inserted into the muscles whose work needs to be recorded. The impulses from the electrodes are converted into a graph by the myograph and recorded on a special tape, which is then printed out.

During the analysis of muscle activity processes at rest, bioelectric signals and spontaneous contractions are recorded. Then, a slow voluntary contraction of the muscle by the patient and its tonic tension may be required. In this way, a complete picture of tissue function can be obtained.

The process lasts from half an hour to an hour.

Rehabilitation period

Immediately after the diagnosis, you can calmly lead your usual lifestyle, since no recovery time is required.

Painful sensations may occur directly during the insertion of the needle, but they are no different from a regular injection. After the study, discomfort in the tissues or slight soreness is sometimes observed for several days. Warm compresses on the injection sites or small doses of painkillers can help cope with this. Other medications that were stopped for the duration of the examination can be continued with the permission of the child's attending physician.

Indications

The examination should be carried out if certain symptoms are present. These include:

  • nervous tics;
  • injuries to plexuses and peripheral nerves;
  • consequences of poliomyelitis;
  • polyneuropathy;
  • facial nerve neuropathy;
  • muscle weakness;
  • convulsions or spasms;
  • twitching;
  • concussion;
  • defecation;
  • urination disorder;
  • spinal or cerebral microstroke;
  • spinal cord injuries;
  • tunnel syndrome, etc.

Contraindications

If any of the above factors are present, you should consult a specialist about the possibility of conducting the test. Contraindications include:

  • blood clotting disorders;
  • purulent wounds, burns or open ulcers at the sites of the procedure;
  • epilepsy;
  • angina attacks;
  • the presence of a pacemaker or other implants;
  • severe hypertension;
  • mental disorders.

Complications

The likelihood of complications when using this research method is minimal. If the procedure is performed correctly, disposable needles are used, which eliminates the possibility of blood poisoning.

The only unpleasant sensations are a slight tingling at the sites of electrode attachment and slight pain from the insertion of the needle.
