General information

For diagnosing diseases and changes in the functioning of the middle ear in children, tympanometry or impedancemetry is used. An objective study determines the degree of conductivity of the ear ossicles, movement of the eardrum, and the functioning of the hearing organs. It allows you to identify earwax plugs, problems with acoustic conductivity, fluids and tumors, cicatricial changes and dangerous neoplasms in the middle ear, damage or perforation of the eardrum, otosclerosis, fixation or rupture of the chain of auditory ossicles.

Diagnostics are carried out in the doctor's office. First, the otolaryngologist must examine the patient, excluding blockage of the ear canal. Conventional testing methods are used for children over five years old. Children aged 2.5 to 5 years are diagnosed using play audiometry. The youngest are tested using visual enhanced audiometry (used for patients aged 6 months to 2.5 years).

The microphone will record the reflected signal in case of deviations or diseases.

Rehabilitation period

After the examination, the child may need a short rest, in the first hours after it it is advisable to refrain from listening to music and loud sounds.

Indications

Ear diseases and disorders are diagnosed using impedancemetry if the following is observed:

• pathology of the auditory tubes or eardrum;
• hearing loss;
• decreased perception of sounds;
• diseases and injuries of the ear;
• enlarged adenoids, adenoiditis;
• frequent otitis and complications after them.

Contraindications

There are no contraindications to tympanometry. The diagnosis should be performed by an experienced otolaryngologist or audiologist. Checking for various abnormalities in children under six months is an extremely rare practice in pediatric otolaryngology.

Complications

If impedancemetry is performed by an experienced specialist, complications during diagnosis do not arise.
