Massage is a non-drug method of treating pathologies of internal organs, the musculoskeletal system, or a preventive method used to strengthen the body in general.
General information
There are therapeutic and preventive baby massages. You can visit a massage therapist from the age of two weeks. This helps to relax muscles, relieve tone, strengthen the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, develop joints and reflexes.
It is based on classical methods, that is, stroking and rubbing movements, vibration, kneading. In some cases, the complex is “diluted” with light percussion techniques and point impact. It is worth noting that each of the techniques affects the nervous system in different ways: for example, stroking and rubbing are calming, but pinching, point or light percussion manipulations are exciting.
Strengthening, orthopedic or general massage for infants begins with stroking. This is necessary to prepare the body for subsequent manipulations. During stroking, blood flow is activated, pain subsides, anxiety goes away. Tactile contact between the massage therapist and the child is restored.
Rubbing has a deeper effect. During it, subcutaneous tissues, muscles, tendons and ligaments are affected.
Kneading accelerates lymph and blood flow, has a positive effect on the joints, muscles, tendons and respiratory system of the child. It is performed with soft, energetic movements using one of the techniques - rolling or pincer-like. Vibration has a positive effect on metabolic processes. Vibration is performed in the form of shaking, but closer to 4 months and older, light tapping is already used.
Massage for a child is a powerful tactile irritant, affecting not only the physiological development and formation of motor reactions, but also the emotional background of the baby.
Procedure
Preparation
The session is carried out on a hard surface, ideally a changing table covered with a clean diaper. The air temperature must not be below 220. No heating devices must be installed near the massage table, and the windows must be closed to avoid drafts.
The massage therapist must adhere to the following requirements:
- hands must be clean, dry, warm and open to the elbows (sleeves shortened), nails cut short;
- rings, bracelets, watches and other jewelry must be removed;
- dry skin of the hands must be pre-moistened with baby oil.
The procedure must be performed 30-60 minutes before feeding the baby or 45-60 minutes after.
Massage for infants
The session begins with stroking the body with the palm or the back of the hand. Smoothly, with slight pressure. On the legs, the masseur follows the direction from the foot to the groin area, on the arms from the hands to the armpits, on the tummy and chest - clockwise with circular touches, and on the back - up and down along the spine.
Rubbing ensures the treatment of deeper layers and tissues. It is carried out in a spiral and straight line with the pads of the fingers, with slight pressure. In this way, the upper and lower limbs are treated.
Then knead the gluteal and long muscles of the back (along the spine), using only the index and middle fingers. Pincer-like kneading is replaced by rolling, when the massage therapist acts on the surface with the palms of both hands.
Professional massage for infants is supplemented by bending and unbending the limbs, crawling, reflex walking, rocking in the "embryo" position.
Rehabilitation period
After the session, the infant lies for some time covered with a towel or diaper to restore heat exchange processes in the body, pulse.
