Vaccination against tick-borne encephalitis is the only effective way to protect a child from infection in a high-risk area. But most parents do not dare to do it due to the low level of awareness about the danger of this disease.

General information

Tick-borne encephalitis affects the central nervous system and motor center, causes cerebral edema and paralysis. The virus can enter the body through the bite of an infected tick, consumption of unboiled goat or cow's milk, use of dirty food, violation of hygiene rules. For immunization, a vaccine consisting of inactivated (killed) viruses is used. The injection must be given three or two times - this depends on the chosen scheme. Repeated administration of the drug is necessary so that the body can learn to recognize viral antigens and fight them. Maximum protection is achieved 7 days after the second dose.

Immunization carried out post factum after a tick bite is ineffective. In this case, urgent treatment with specific immunoglobulin is carried out.

Revaccination is carried out in the spring - once a year for 3 years. The immunity that is formed is unstable, so if the threat of infection remains, the vaccination is repeated once every 5 years. Foreign vaccines are used for one-year-old children, and Russian-made vaccines are used for those over 4 years old. They differ in the degree of purification, primary administration schemes, revaccination schedule, and antigen doses. The vaccine does not contain formaldehyde, preservatives, or antibiotics. It can be combined with other vaccinations, except BCG.

The main condition for obtaining stable protection is that the vaccination must be done at least two weeks (preferably a month) before traveling to a dangerous zone.

Procedure

Preparation

On the day of the scheduled procedure, be sure to visit your local doctor for a detailed examination (ears, throat, nose, body temperature measurement). Make sure that the vaccination room has anti-shock therapy.

The child must be absolutely healthy. If any family member is sick with ARVI, the procedure should be postponed until you are completely sure that the baby is not infected.

Conduct

The procedure is carried out by a medical worker in the procedure room. The injection site is treated with alcohol. Immediately before use, the ampoule is shaken until an opaque homogeneous white suspension is obtained without foreign formations and flakes. The vaccine is administered subcutaneously, in the outer area of the shoulder, for children under 1.5 years old - in the thigh. Intravascular administration of the drug should not be allowed - this can lead to a shock reaction of the body. The used ampoule is entered into the medical journal of the established form. They note its serial number, the manufacturer, the date of use and the body's reaction to the intervention.

Rehabilitation period

After the vaccination, there may be local reactions: soreness, slight redness, compaction or swelling. Allergic symptoms are possible. It is advisable to remain under medical supervision for 30 minutes after the procedure.

Indications

Vaccination against tick-borne encephalitis is necessary for children living in areas with a high risk of contracting this disease, or those who temporarily visit such an area (tourists, children of military personnel, before going to summer camp, etc.).

Vaccination may be ineffective for children with congenital or acquired immunodeficiency, taking corticosteroids or chemotherapy.

Contraindications

Children under 4 years of age cannot be vaccinated with the Russian vaccine, as well as if the child has:

  • chronic progressive diseases in acute stages;
  • allergic reactions to chicken egg white;
  • acute respiratory disease;
  • diseases of the kidneys, liver, thyroid gland, blood;
  • epilepsy seizures;
  • tuberculosis;
  • bronchial asthma;
  • food allergy;
  • systemic problems with connective tissue;
  • diabetes mellitus;
  • poor tolerance of the primary vaccine.

For a foreign vaccine, the list is much shorter. It is prohibited to vaccinate:

  • in case of allergic reactions to egg white;
  • in case of acute respiratory infections;
  • under 12 months of age.

Complications

Possible consequences:

  • enlarged lymph nodes;
  • problems with sleep and appetite;
  • hyperthermia (increased temperature);
  • allergic reaction;
  • general malaise (headache and aches in muscles, joints).
