Eyelid massage is a medical procedure that also has a cosmetic and tonic effect.

General information

For certain inflammatory processes and chronic eye diseases, eyelid massage is an excellent aid that can significantly improve the patient's condition by circulating the blood and relieving tension from the affected areas.

Regularly performed eyelid massage stimulates small vessels and capillaries to work, improves blood flow, prevents stagnation of both blood and sebaceous glands.

Massage helps to improve the health of the skin around the eyes. This type of massage is part of physical exercises aimed at overall health of the eyes. It also plays an important role in the fight against inflammatory diseases of the eyelids.

Procedure

Preparation

If the eyelid massage procedure is performed at home, you need to wash your hands, then (regardless of the place where the procedure is performed) remove makeup. In specialized institutions, general facial massage includes eyelid massage, and then a special cream is used. But for medicinal purposes it is better to do without it.

The process of eyelid massage

First, it is necessary to degrease the edge of the eyelid. To do this, wipe the eyelids with a swab wound on a glass rod. This swab should be moistened in a mixture of alcohol and ether or just in alcohol.

This part of the procedure has two important functions:

  • opens the excretory streams of the sebaceous glands;
  • removes existing sebaceous scales.

Eyelid massage can be done with fingertips, especially since they are much more sensitive and delicate. In any case, the skin should not be stretched. The movements are as follows: from the inner side of the eye to the outer - in the case of the upper eyelid; and from the outer side of the eye to the inner - for the lower eyelid, respectively. At the edge of the orbit, the movements should be the most gentle, stroking.

The eyelid massage itself is performed with stroking movements, which seem to draw neat lines along the eyelid with a cotton swab. This swab must be soaked in sulfocyl ointment (10-20%) or one percent tetracycline ointment.

For therapeutic purposes, eyelid massage is used for blepharitis. A specially prescribed medicinal ointment by an ophthalmologist is carefully applied to the diseased eyelids, the massage movements themselves are accompanied by light pressure directed toward the edge of the eyelids. First, the upper eyelid is massaged, then the lower one.

Another disease that eyelid massage helps with is demodicosis. In the case of fighting this disease, massage allows you to relax the skin of the eyelids. You should gently and tenderly massage the edges of the eyelids, near the eyelashes, with your fingertips.

Rehabilitation period

The procedure is painless, there is no need for rehabilitation. There are no complications. Many people recommend placing cotton pads soaked in chamomile infusion on closed eyes after the procedure.

Indications

Despite its apparent simplicity, this procedure is an effective aid in a number of diseases.

Among them:

  • chronic conjunctivitis;
  • cicatricial changes in the appendages of the eyes;
  • rehabilitation after ophthalmological surgeries (only by prescription or with the approval of the attending ophthalmologist);
  • rheumatic eye disease;
  • chronic diseases eyelids;
  • blepharitis;
  • demodicosis;
  • for circles, wrinkles and bags around the eyes.

Contraindications

Contraindications to this procedure are as follows:

  • acute neuralgia of the trigeminal or facial nerves;
  • acute inflammatory processes of the skin around the eyes;
  • damage to areas of the skin of the eyelids and around the eyes.

Prices and clinics

This procedure can be easily performed at home, independently. However, the quality of its implementation, and, consequently, the level of effectiveness, will be inferior to eyelid massage if it is done by a professional. A specialist who does eyelid massage in a medical center uses not only his hands, but also special devices that are not available to a wide range of consumers. Eyelid massage is done in different medical centers, and the cost depends, first of all, on its location.
