Computer eye perimetry is an ophthalmological examination of the human visual field.
Computer eye perimetry is an ophthalmological examination of a person's visual field.

General information

When the head is still and the gaze is clearly fixed on a specific target, we see not only what we are looking at. Our gaze, albeit less clearly, covers a larger area of space, that is, it has a field of vision. Computer eye perimetry examines the visual field of the human eye. This indicator indicates the general state of vision, as well as some diseases and their progression.

By examining perimetry, a specialist can learn both the general state of the visual system and identify individual disorders, or learn about associated health problems, such as the consequences of head injuries.

In particular, narrowing of the visual field can be one of the symptoms of glaucoma, although only an ophthalmologist can give a specific diagnosis.

Procedure

Preparation

No special preparation is required for computer eye perimetry. However, in order for the examination results to be correct, it is necessary to take into account in advance the influence of such factors on the examination results as:

  • drooping upper eyelid;
  • high bridge of the nose;
  • very low vision;
  • irritation of the eye area near a large vessel.

The process of computer eye perimetry

The patient sits in front of a special device and takes a joystick in his hands. The gaze is fixed on a light mark specially reproduced on the device. Then, in a chaotic order, light points appear on it, and the patient, reacting to the appearance of these light signals, presses a button on the joystick. The brightness, speed of appearance and location of the appearing light spots are unpredictable, but the speed gradually increases, and the direction of their movement changes. Based on the procedure, the computer displays a graph - a map of the human visual field, which displays all the perimetry indicators. The indicators of the human visual field reflect the general condition of his visual system, and also indirectly indicate certain health problems, be it injuries or disruption of the blood vessels. The doctor analyzes the graph and creates a complete picture of the patient's visual field and the state of his visual system.

Rehabilitation period

This diagnostic procedure is painless, lasts from 5 to 20 minutes. The patient does not need a rehabilitation period after it. There are also no complications.

Indications

Indications for computer eye perimetry:

  • glaucoma;
  • traumatic brain injury;
  • brain tumors;
  • retinal dystrophy;
  • circulatory disorders and hemorrhages;
  • optic nerve diseases.

Contraindications

Contraindications for this procedure are as follows:

  • mental disorders;
  • state of alcohol or drug intoxication (even a minimal dose of narcotic substances, used before the procedure is contraindicated).

Prices and clinics

At the moment, computer perimetry of the eyes is the most modern and convenient way to examine a person's field of vision. However, to carry out this procedure, certain technical equipment and the experience of an ophthalmologist are required, since the computer only gives out data, only a specialist can analyze them and make a conclusion. The price of computer perimetry varies depending on the clinic and its technical equipment.
