In medicine, polycythemia is most often defined as an oncological diagnosis characterized by an increase in the level of all formed elements of the blood, but the number of red blood cells increases most of all.

General information

True polycythemia (erythremia), or as it is also called - Vaquez disease, is a chronic form of cancer, in which the absolute mass of blood cells constantly increases. This type, in turn, is subdivided into:

  • primary, which is an independent disease;
  • secondary, developing as a result of pathology of the respiratory organs.

According to statistics, today Vaquez disease annually affects three to five people per million inhabitants of our planet and is observed mainly in middle-aged or elderly men.

With relative polycythemia, the treatment of which is not very complicated, the total mass of red blood cells remains at a constant level, and an increase in their total volume (TVE) is caused by a decrease in the amount of plasma in the blood.

Procedure

The main goal in the fight against erythremia is to prevent the development of possible complications associated with the vascular system by lowering the TVE and constantly maintaining it in norm.

Today, there are several ways to combat this pathology. The most effective, according to most doctors, is the bloodletting method, in which about three hundred milliliters of blood are removed from the patient's body every week. However, it must be remembered that most elderly people suffer from various problems associated with the cardiovascular system. Therefore, bloodletting in this case must be carried out extremely carefully.

If the method of reducing the volume of blood fluid for some reason is not applicable to this patient, then high-molecular dextran is administered to the patient instead of the removed blood.

It is worth noting that the above procedure does not always allow you to maintain the required number of red blood cells. Therefore, in some situations, doctors resort to the use of myelosuppressive therapy.

Indications

The symptoms of polycythemia, the treatment of which at home is impossible, are caused by an excess of platelets and other components of the blood, which leads to the occurrence of various forms of varicose veins.

Such an ailment is a hidden danger, since for a long period of time it does not manifest itself in any way and can be detected completely by accident, for example, when diagnosing a completely different disease.

The main signs of pathology include: extraneous noises in the ears, unreasonable irritability, visual impairment, increased fatigue. This is the hidden nature of the disease, because such symptoms can easily be attributed to old age or another disease.

However, there are also obvious signs of Vaquez disease, such as:

  • reddening of the skin;
  • slight enlargement of some internal organs (spleen and liver);
  • acute pain in the chest area;
  • in severe situations - bleeding in the oral cavity and thrombosis of the venous vessels.

Contraindications

Treatment of polycythemia by bloodletting is contraindicated in patients with low iron content in the body, poor tolerance of the procedure, in case of its ineffectiveness.
