Safenectomy is a minimally invasive procedure that is performed to remove the great saphenous vein in case of varicose veins.

General information

Saphenectomy is a radical method of treating varicose veins. As a rule, it is used if conservative treatment methods have not yielded positive results.

Unlike outdated removal techniques that required opening the skin along the vein, saphenectomy involves making several incisions.

Procedure

Preparation

The doctor studies the test results. Under the control of a duplex scanner, the venous trunks, tributaries, and perforating veins are marked.

Saphenectomy

The surgeon makes a 3 cm long incision in the inguinal fold. The doctor ligates and crosses all the tributaries. The vein itself is crossed after ligation. Next, a small (7-8 mm) incision is made at the inner ankle of the foot. This is how access to the initial section of the great saphenous vein is provided. A probe with a conical tip is inserted into the lumen of the vein. It is carried out along the entire vein. Then the vein is fixed on the probe, and the probe itself is pulled in the opposite direction. Large varicose tributaries are removed. A cotton-gauze roller is placed along the path of the vein. The leg is tightly wrapped with an elastic bandage.

Rehabilitation period

At the incision sites, the patient has small cosmetic sutures that are almost invisible. The postoperative period of saphenectomy consists of wearing corrective underwear for several days after the procedure.

Indications

Saphenectomy is prescribed for severe varicose veins, as well as in cases where conservative treatment methods have not yielded positive results.

Contraindications

The intervention is contraindicated in diseases of the kidneys, lungs, liver, and heart. The technique is also not recommended in the presence of purulent diseases and pregnancy.

Complications

Possible consequences after the procedure:

  • damage to surrounding tissues, bleeding and hemorrhage;
  • development of inflammatory processes;
  • decreased sensitivity on the inner surface of the thigh and lower leg, discomfort in these areas.
