Ligation of perforating veins is one of the surgical methods of treating varicose veins.

General information

Communicants or perforator veins are vessels with very thin walls. Their main function is to connect deep and superficial veins. The diameter of perforating veins varies from 5 mm to 15 cm, all of them have valves that direct the blood flow. It is the violation of blood flow that is the main cause of all diseases of the venous system of the upper and lower extremities. Communicants connect with one of the tributaries of the main trunk of the saphenous vein. There are about 100 such vessels in the human body.

In healthy people, perforator veins transport blood from superficial veins to deep veins. If there are pathologies, trophic disorders, then the blood is discharged in the opposite direction. In this case, intravenous pressure increases, and, as a result, varicose veins worsen.

Perforating vein ligation can be performed in the following ways:

  • suprafascial - suitable for non-exacerbated varicose disease;
  • subfascial - for more advanced stages of the disease.

Procedure

Preparation

The patient must undergo duplex ultrasound angioscanning. This will allow determining the location of the insolvent vessel and performing the operation with high accuracy. You also need to take tests (clinical minimum) and do an ECG.

Ligation of perforating veins

An incision up to 4 cm long is made in the affected area. Special cuffs are applied to the shin and thigh, which catch the vessels and reduce tissue bleeding. A tube and visualization instruments are inserted through the incision. Carbon dioxide is introduced into the affected vessel, which straightens the tissue. The vein is ligated using ultrasonic scissors. After that, the devices are removed, the cuffs are removed, and the wound is sutured. A bandage and elastic bandaging of the operated limb are made. The entire procedure takes no more than an hour.

Rehabilitation period

The recovery period lasts from 5 to 10 days. In case of painful sensations, painkillers can be taken.

After the operation, the patient is strictly prohibited from:

  • physical activity;
  • women should wear high-heeled shoes;
  • overcooling the limb.

Indications

The operation is performed on patients who have varicose veins and trophic disorders.

Contraindications

The technique is contraindicated for pregnant and lactating women, with thrombophlebitis, thrombosis and atherosclerosis, as well as dermatological diseases in the area of the surgical incision.

Complications

There is a possibility of complications. After the procedure, the following is possible:

  • numbness of the limb;
  • hematomas;
  • edema;
  • lymph leakage;
  • infection and inflammatory processes (in extremely rare cases).
