Ultrasound of the vessels of the extremities is the safest and most accurate method for examining the vascular system of the legs and arms. The diagnostics are non-invasive, painless, and highly accurate, so at the current stage of development of medicine, ultrasound of the vessels of the extremities is a fairly popular and widespread study. Phlebologists and surgeons most often prescribe this diagnostics.

Ultrasound of the vessels of the extremities: how is it performed?

The principle of the study is that ultrasound has the property of reflecting from moving blood particles. A special gel is applied to the skin of the examination area for better conductivity, and scanning begins using a special ultrasound sensor that slowly moves over the surface of the skin. Everything that happens is visualized on the computer monitor.

First, the limbs are examined in a bent state, and then in an unbent state.

It is important to take into account the objectives of the study and the individual characteristics of the patient. Taking this into account, the required ultrasound frequency is selected (from 6 MHz to 12 MHz).

It is worth mentioning that there are:

  • ultrasound of the vessels of the lower extremities;
  • ultrasound of the vessels of the upper extremities.

This diagnostics can be carried out both comprehensively and separately, depending on the symptoms and condition of the patient.

The methods include:

  • classical ultrasound of vessels - the most popular, prescribed as one of the first methods for diagnosing vascular pathologies;
  • duplex scanning - a combination of Doppler and color mapping - study the speed and direction of blood flow;
  • triplex scanning - the most informative diagnostics, with the help of which we get a three-dimensional picture of the vessels of the arms and legs.

Ultrasound of the vessels of the lower extremities: what does it show?

When conducting diagnostics, the doctor analyzes the walls of the veins and arteries, their localization and patency. The valves, their functionality, and the presence of anomalies are clearly visualized. Most often, during the ultrasound examination they detect:

  • blood clots and plaques;
  • spasmodic processes;
  • tumors.

What are the indications for conducting an ultrasound of the vessels of the extremities?

After consultation and examination by a phlebologist, they often resort to this study. The reasons for this may be:

  • swelling and numbness of the limbs;
  • visual signs of varicose veins: spider veins, skin discoloration, etc.;
  • long-term non-healing injuries on the arms or legs;
  • chronic fatigue in the legs;
  • regular pain syndromes;
  • cramps;
  • pathological changes: itchy skin, lameness.

Ultrasound of the vessels of the extremities: what are the limitations?

The diagnostic procedure will have to be postponed if:

  • in the process of exacerbation of infectious diseases;
  • burns, rashes, wounds on the skin area of the upcoming examination;
  • sudden asthma attacks.

No special measures are expected to prepare for the ultrasound examination.
