Ultrasound of veins is an effective method for diagnosing vascular diseases at early stages. The principle of operation is the penetration of ultrasound waves through tissues, their reflection and visualization of the area under study on the monitor screen. During this diagnostics, it is possible to determine the condition of the vessels, the presence of plaques and blood clots, and the speed of blood flow. Most often, phlebologists prescribe these studies. The most frequently used is ultrasound of the vessels of the lower extremities, since varicose veins are one of the most common, and vascular occlusion is the cause of death of a large number of people in the modern world.

Ultrasound of veins: types of examinations

There are several methods that make it possible to determine the state of the circulatory system and detect the development of pathologies. These include:

  • angiography;
  • doppler mapping of blood vessels;
  • duplex scanning;
  • triplex scanning.

The choice of method depends on the symptoms and purpose of the study. Therefore, a preliminary consultation with a doctor is required.

Ultrasound of the veins of the lower extremities

Ultrasound diagnostics makes it possible to obtain information about the state of the vascular system of the legs from the inside. During the study, a two-dimensional image is obtained that recreates the condition of the vessel walls and valves, the presence of blood clots and the speed of blood flow. This allows you to detect:

  • pathologies in the development of veins;
  • varicose veins (even at the earliest stages of development);
  • vascular injuries;
  • venous insufficiency;
  • thrombosis and fistulas.

When should you do an ultrasound of the veins?

Indications for this examination are:

  • chronic fatigue and pain in the legs;
  • swelling, numbness in the lower extremities;
  • vascular mesh;
  • unnatural skin color (purple or cyanotic);
  • convulsions;
  • low temperature of the extremities at any time of the year.

Are there any contraindications to vein ultrasound?

There are no absolute restrictions, but there are cases when the study should be postponed. For example:

  • open wounds in the area of examination;
  • infectious skin diseases;
  • myocardial infarction;
  • heart failure.

No preparation for ultrasound diagnostics of veins is required.
