Ultrasound of soft tissues is an informative method for identifying pathologies associated with the subcutaneous fat of the body, muscles, and lymph nodes. The study has become widespread due to its simplicity, cost-effectiveness, and the absence of serious contraindications. Diagnostics is based on the use of ultrasound waves of different frequencies. Ultrasound is used both for primary diagnostics and to clarify an already established diagnosis.

Ultrasound of soft tissues of the neck

This type of examination is often prescribed by specialists when inflammatory processes in this area are suspected. For example, if a preliminary examination by palpation revealed compactions and changes in the structure of the neck. Ultrasound examination of soft tissues of the neck allows visualization of carotid arteries, thyroid pathologies, trachea and muscles.

Ultrasound of soft tissues: what it shows

Ultrasound examination allows detection of hygromas, hemangiomas, lipomas, other neoplasms and pathological foci. Often, the category of ultrasound of soft tissues also includes examination of structures in the joints. Using ultrasound, a specialist can assess the nature and contents of a pathological formation, blood circulation disorders, the location of the lesion and its size, structural features, etc.

Soft tissue ultrasound: indications

Doctors recommend performing an ultrasound examination of soft tissues to diagnose the following disorders:

  • neoplasms (hemangiomas, atheromas, hygromas, chondromas, etc.);
  • abscesses;
  • phlegmon (purulent formations);
  • hematomas due to injuries;
  • diseases of the connective tissue tissues;
  • rheumatism;
  • lymphostasis;
  • hernias;
  • myositis.

Ultrasound monitoring is also required for intra-joint surgeries to monitor ongoing therapy.

Contraindications

The study is contraindicated for patients with purulent skin lesions, burns in areas of the skin where the sound-conducting gel should be applied and the ultrasound sensor used.

Soft tissue ultrasound: preparation

No special preparatory measures are needed. Immediately before the session, the specialist applies a special gel to the area being examined, providing better sound conductivity of the tissues.
