Knee ultrasound: what it shows
During the examination, bone and cartilage structures, soft tissues, ligaments, vessels and synovial fluid are visualized. The structure of the knee is quite complex, and it should be taken into account that this area bears a large number of loads. During the examination, the specialist evaluates the condition of the patella, whether there is bursitis or prolapse, if there is a cyst or any other neoplasms - their presence will be clearly visible.
Reasons for doing an ultrasound of the knee joint
Indications for the study are determined by the attending physician, this may be a traumatologist or rheumatologist, surgeon. The examination is considered appropriate:
- in inflammatory and degenerative processes of the joints;
- in osteochondropathy;
- injuries;
- in suspected neoplasms;
- in pain symptoms;
- in swelling and the presence of deformation.
Contraindications to the procedure
There are no absolute contraindications to knee ultrasound, but in case of damage to the skin, the presence of any rashes in the area of the examination, the diagnosis should be postponed. As with any other diagnostics, everything should be discussed in advance at a preliminary consultation with a doctor.
Knee joint ultrasound: is preparation necessary?
No preliminary preparation is required for an ultrasound diagnosis of the knee joint. It should only be noted that if the patient received intra-articular injections, it is necessary to postpone a visit to the ultrasound diagnostician for at least 5 days.
