Magnetic resonance angiography is a test that allows one to obtain an image of body tissues and organs without using X-ray radiation.

General information

When exposed to radio waves, electromagnetic energy is released in a fairly strong magnetic field, after which it is recorded and processed using computer.

This study allows you to get high-quality images of blood vessels without the use of radiopaque agents. The procedure is completely painless.

Procedure

Preparation

Before magnetic resonance angiography, the patient is given a questionnaire to fill out, where he indicates whether there are any metal objects in his body (they can affect the quality of the image). Before starting, you must remove absolutely all metal objects, clothing with metal buttons, jewelry, glasses, wigs or dentures. Before the diagnosis, be sure to inform the doctor about any allergies to any drugs.

Magnetic resonance angiography procedure

On a special table, the patient is placed in a magnetic resonance chamber. The doctor leaves the room, but the patient can communicate with him via intercom.

The examination usually consists of 2-6 sessions of obtaining images, each of which lasts from two to fifteen minutes. Depending on the type of diagnostic surgery, the duration is from ten minutes to one hour.

If a contrast study is required, during one of the sessions the patient is given intravenous gadolinium, with the help of which the vessels become more contrasting.

Rehabilitation period

After the examination is completed, the catheter is removed, the puncture site is pressed for 25 minutes to stop the bleeding. A special aseptic pressure bandage is applied to the puncture area and the patient is prescribed bed rest.

Indications and contraindications

The procedure is most often used to diagnose the following diseases:

  • congenital heart defects;
  • aneurysm;
  • aortic aneurysm dissection;
  • vasculitis;
  • renal artery stenosis;
  • atherosclerosis;
  • carotid artery diseases.

Contraindications

The procedure is contraindicated in the following cases:

  • body weight the patient is over 130 kg;
  • the patient has an artificial pacemaker and other devices implanted in the body;
  • claustrophobia;
  • pregnancy.

Complications

No complications were noted during the examination. However, people who suffer from claustrophobia may experience some problems. In order to eliminate them, sometimes it is necessary to use sedatives.

Prices and clinics

The examination is always performed by a qualified cardiologist in a specialized cardiology center, hospital or clinic. You can find out the price of the procedure on this medical website.
