Thyroid MRI with contrast
Sometimes magnetic resonance imaging is prescribed together with the administration of a contrast agent. With this type of examination, the doctor receives a full 3D view of tissues, vessels, blood flow disorders and the presence of neoplasms. The value of MRI with contrast is that it is possible to examine the organ with maximum visualization. The contrast is excreted in the urine and does not cause harm, unless there is an allergy to iodine.
Indications for MRI of the thyroid gland
There are a number of factors in the presence of which the doctor sends for examination. These include:
- enlargement of the thyroid gland;
- inflammatory or infectious process in the body;
- before surgery;
- sharp fluctuations in the patient's weight;
- sleep problems, nervous system disorders.
Reasons to refuse MRI
Contraindications to the procedure:
- pregnancy and lactation;
- the presence of pacemakers, electronic devices, metal prostheses in the patient's body;
- fear of confined spaces;
- renal failure, allergy to iodine (in case of using contrast).
Thyroid MRI: Preparation
If contrast is used, you must not eat for 5 hours before the examination. Immediately before the magnetic resonance imaging, you will need to remove all metal accessories and jewelry.
