The CT scan of the eye
The patient fixes his gaze on a special mark, and the specialist performs several scans. The results are displayed on the computer monitor in the form of tables. The informativeness of diagnostics may be impaired by the presence of hemorrhages in the eyes or corneal opacity.
Examination of the eyes using computed tomography with contrast
For more detailed diagnostics, a contrast agent is used. This component is administered intravenously. Thus, the contrast colors the blood flow and gives a clear picture of the presence of neoplasms and changes in the structure of the visual organs.
CT of the eye: indications
This diagnostic is carried out upon referral from a doctor. It is prescribed for:
- loss of vision;
- painful symptoms of the eyeball;
- to determine the location of foreign bodies before surgery;
- suspected cancer;
- damage to the visual organs after diseases;
- traumatic injury;
- the inflammatory process.
Contraindications to CT
The procedure should be avoided:
- during pregnancy and lactation;
- children under 14 years of age;
- if there is an allergy to iodine, chronic diseases.
Features of preparation
There are no special measures to prepare for CT of the eye. If contrast is to be administered, do not eat for 5 hours before the examination. Before CT scanning, remove all metal jewelry and accessories.
