Cervical cancer (CC) ranks third after breast and colorectal cancers.
General Information
Cervical cancer is rarely diagnosed in girls under twenty. It lacks specific symptoms, especially in early stages. Cervical intraepithelial neoplasia, a precursor to CC, is asymptomatic. With metastasis, pain during intercourse intensifies, the menstrual cycle disrupts, and heavy discharge or bleeding occurs. This test is mandatory for women with HPV, chlamydia, hepatitis, immunodeficiency, HIV, chronic inflammation, or long-term contraceptive use. At-risk groups include those with early sexual activity, frequent partner changes, or sex toy use.
Oncocytology testing detects changes in tissues lining the ectocervix and endocervix, serving as the primary method for identifying precancerous processes across various locations.
Advantages of the investigation:
- safety and painlessness;
- dynamic study of pathological sites;
- early-stage cancer detection.
This test cannot assess infiltrative growth by studying cells rather than affected tissues.
Indications for Cytological Investigation of Cervical and Cervical Canal Scrapings
Preventive exams are mandatory, even post-menopause.
Experts recommend women undergo cytological screening at least once every three years.
Low epithelial levels indicate insufficient estrogen. Elevated levels suggest inflammation or recent infections. Altered cells signify malignant lesions.
How Cytological Investigation of Cervical and Cervical Canal Scrapings Is Conducted
Biomaterial is collected using a special spatula or brush, treated with a solution, and stained. Women should provide smears from day 5 of menstruation to five days before the next period.
Contraindications:
- inflammation;
- local medication use;
- recent douching;
- use of lubricants or tampons within three days.
Results may be inaccurate if:
- Girls under 20 may get false positives due to hormonal epithelial changes.
- Preparation is improper.
- A bimanual test precedes scraping, contaminating the sample with talc.
Completion Time
Results are available within 1–5 business days, depending on lab workload.
