General Information
This method involves microscopic diagnosis of cell structure in normal and diseased states.
Cell composition is studied using various techniques, including:
- bronchoscopy;
- bronchial catheterization;
- esophagogastroduodenoscopy;
- laparoscopy;
- rectoromanoscopy;
- colonoscopy;
- cystoscopy.
The primary purpose is to determine the presence or absence of cancerous formations (oncocytology).
It assesses skin and mucosal conditions for cancer, hormonal activity, and wound healing processes.
Indications for Cytological Investigation of Endoscopic Material
This test provides detailed characteristics of developing changes (proliferative or precancerous states), determining treatment methods for tumors (chemotherapy, surgery, radiation, or combined).
Indications include preventive screening, diagnosis confirmation or clarification, treatment monitoring, early detection (growth dynamics), and cases where biopsy is unfeasible.
How Cytological Investigation of Endoscopic Material Is Conducted
No special preparation is required. Avoid sampling during menstruation, post-vaginal sanitation (douching or washing), or antibiotic use, as these may affect accuracy. Women should schedule the procedure on days 5–19 or 19–21 of their cycle. Scrapings are gently collected from accessible lesion surfaces using a slide edge, scalpel, or spatula.
Types of cytological investigation of endoscopic material:
- imprints from pinch biopsies;
- imprints from biopsy fragments;
- bronchoscopy;
- gastroscopy;
- smears from pinch biopsy elements;
- laryngoscopy;
- rectoscopy;
- transbronchial punctures;
- cystoscopy of native urine.
Imprints, scrapings, or other biomaterials are applied to a lab slide and examined microscopically. All tools must be sterile, preferably single-use.
Completion Time for Cytological Investigation of Endoscopic Material
Results are typically ready within 3–5 business days.
