General information
Nowadays, freezing of biological material is increasingly carried out, which is associated with the desire of patients to store it for several years without losing quality. This process is also facilitated by the capabilities of modern medicine and the need to treat infertility, both female and male.
It is important to note that the likelihood of a woman becoming pregnant does not decrease due to the use of defrosted material.
Procedure
Preparation
Before the procedure, it is necessary to take some tests:
- blood test for HIV infection, RW, hepatitis;
- smear for latent infectious processes;
- cryotests to assess the quality of sperm, which should be preserved after defrosting.
This event assesses the material and the possibility of its further use.
Biomaterial can be taken within a few days 2-3 times, if it is necessary to obtain the required amount of sperm.
Sperm cryopreservation procedure
The procedure takes place in several stages:
- initial sperm donation and assessment of its condition using a test such as a spermogram;
- ejaculate diagnostics;
- sperm concentration to 1 ml and addition of a cryoprotector;
- 15 minutes after this, the biomaterial is placed in a special container, after which the contents are frozen using a certain drug and sent to a cryostorage base.
After the procedure
The owner can dispose of the frozen material as he pleases. It is also possible to transport the ejaculate, if necessary, due to a change of place of residence or medical institution, as well as in the case of permission to use the biomaterial for fertilization by other people. To do this, first of all, a patient statement is drawn up, allowing the use of materials, which also indicates the date of the procedure, the qualitative composition of the ejaculate and, possibly, other data.
Indications
The main indications for the sperm cryopreservation procedure are:
- the need to create a donor sperm bank;
- the inability to donate sperm for artificial insemination of female eggs taken after ovarian puncture;
- the need to accumulate and concentrate sperm if their quantity is insufficient in the sperm;
- before starting treatment for oncological diseases that can affect the fertile function of sperm.
The most optimal sperm storage period – 3 years. The longest period of storage of ejaculate known in history and which gave a positive result in conception and pregnancy is 13 years.
Contraindications
There are no contraindications to cryopreservation.
Complications
There have never been any complications in conception using material defrosted after cryopreservation. This method does not affect the pregnancy process or the child itself.
