Uranoplasty is a reconstructive surgical intervention aimed at eliminating such a pathology as a cleft palate (cleft palate).

General information

During this operation, not only the palate is restored, but also the middle part of the child's pharynx. Usually, uranoplasty is performed at the age of three to six years - depending on the complexity and scale of the operation and the course of the pathology. The attending physician must constantly monitor the child's condition, determining the optimal time for the intervention.

Uranoplasty significantly affects the child's lifestyle and health, because this operation achieves:

  • normalization of nutrition;
  • the possibility of normal functioning of the speech apparatus;
  • a significant cosmetic effect that will help with the future socialization of the child and his adaptation in society.
A cleft palate requires surgical intervention as early as possible, in early childhood, before the child goes to school.

The process of the procedure

Preparation

As preparation for the operation, the baby's health is diagnosed, a blood test is taken, the pathology itself and the child's condition as a whole are examined. Anesthesia is selected. The operation is performed under the supervision of an anesthesiologist-resuscitator.

The uranoplasty procedure

Since this congenital defect develops differently in children, there are several methods for performing uranoplasty. There are gentle techniques that can be used even before the child is three years old. Such operations are performed in case of minor pathology. The early age of the patient helps to prevent the development of complications. The so-called radical uranoplasty is also used. It is used to eliminate the cleft of the hard palate, both through and non-through types.

The most popular is the Limberg method, in which the soft tissues of the palate and mucoperiosteal flaps are used to correct this defect. When choosing this technique, the surgeon works in five stages:

  • selection of the above-mentioned flaps from the patient's own tissues;
  • cutting off the nasal mucosa from the palate;
  • specific osteotomy;
  • impact on the middle part of the pharynx;
  • layer-by-layer suturing.

Rehabilitation course

Bed rest lasts about three days. Food must be ground, and the oral cavity must be disinfected after each meal.

After the procedure, the patient is given a special protective plate, which is worn for a month and a half. It is recommended to keep speaking to a minimum for about 10 days and not to disturb the palate.

Indications

Uranoplasty is indicated for a cleft palate, known as a "cleft palate". This is a highly specialized operation.

Contraindications

Contraindications to surgery:

  • pneumonia;
  • asphyxia;
  • heart and circulatory system defects and other severe pathologies of internal organs;
  • poor blood clotting;
  • birth injuries;
  • ARI;
  • hypoplasia;
  • prematurity.

Complications

Complications in the case of uranoplasty are most often associated with an error during the operation itself, for example, extensive tissue trauma, necrosis, divergence of the edges wounds.

Prices and clinics

Only a surgeon with good experience and sufficiently high qualifications can perform uranoplasty on children. The price of this surgical intervention varies depending on the place where it is performed.
