Abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure that is aimed at eliminating certain cosmetic defects by removing excess fat and sagging skin.

General information

Abdominoplasty is a large-scale and serious surgical intervention aimed at correcting the figure in cases where other methods do not give results. During the operation, a volumetric excision of excess tissue, both skin and fat, occurs. This operation can be of two types:

  • partial abdominoplasty, affecting only certain types of tissue;
  • full abdominoplasty is characterized by the fact that there is also a contraction of connective tissues and abdominal muscles.

The second type of intervention is more radical than the first. It guarantees that the abdominal muscles will not weaken or stretch over time. This type of surgical procedure is combined with liposuction (if urgently needed).

Procedure

Preparation

Before the procedure, the patient undergoes a whole range of examinations. Anamnesis is collected, blood clotting is determined, the kidneys, liver, and cardiovascular system are diagnosed. Attention is also paid to the presence of scars in the abdominal tissues after previous surgeries.

The process of performing abdominoplasty

This surgical procedure is performed under general anesthesia, and therefore monitoring of the patient's condition by an anesthesiologist-resuscitator is mandatory.

Abdominoplasty lasts from two to five hours, depending on the volume of tissue to be removed, as well as whether the abdominal muscles will be affected.

The plastic surgeon makes an incision above the pubis and around the patient's navel, after which the skin and fatty membranes are separated from the anterior abdominal wall. The effect on the rectus abdominis muscles is exerted precisely after this stage of the procedure. Then, using a special hollow needle (cannula), the surgeon removes fat from under the skin, and then excises excess skin tissue. The skin is stretched over the center of the abdomen to the navel area, next to which another hole is made, which is stitched to it. As a rule, the navel remains in place, although its shape may change.

Rehabilitation period

After such a large-scale impact on the body, a long rehabilitation period is required. Drainage is carried out so that the fluids that arise in the tissues during inflammation are removed from the body. Quite large stitches are applied, which are not always visible under underwear. The patient needs a fairly long postoperative care.

Indications

The main indication for abdominoplasty is the presence of a large amount of excess fat and skin tissue in the abdominal area. Most often, this operation is performed on women after pregnancy.

Contraindications

Abdominoplasty is contraindicated for patients with:

  • diabetes;
  • obesity;
  • inflammatory, infectious, exacerbated chronic diseases of internal organs;
  • problems with blood clotting.

Complications

Abdominoplasty is dangerous due to its complications. There is a risk of overloading the pulmonary circulation, which will lead to pulmonary edema. Problems with blood clots may also arise. There is a risk of developing seromas, wound suppuration, hematomas and necrosis.
