Interferons are a group of proteins produced by immune system cells as a protective response to the invasion of harmful agents. The higher their activity, the more productively a person resists infections. They enhance both innate and acquired immunity by activating intracellular processes and intercellular interactions. Interferons are produced in the presence of viruses and microbes and are divided into three classes (α, β, γ) with different functions. IFN-gamma are the main activators of lymphocytes, while alpha and beta have an antiviral effect.

General information

Determination of interferon status - detection interferons and establishing the ability of leukocytes to produce them in response to viruses and immunomodulators.

The analysis of the interferon status is taken to study immune responses, count interferons during a specific disease, and select the most effective immunomodulatory drug.

Procedure

The test does not require any special preparations. It is recommended not to eat for four hours before the manipulation.

The blood for the interferon status must be heparinized, for which a small amount of heparin is added to the test tube. It prevents clotting, and the laboratory technician gets the opportunity to determine the level of IFN of all types before and after exposure to the antigen on lymphocytes, and to study the effect of drugs on the interferon status.

When the immune system is inactive, which is normal for healthy people, the IFN levels are low. After activation, the leukocytes from the sample begin to quickly produce interferon-alpha and gamma. Leukocytes from patients with acute viral infections show a lower response due to the increased content of serum interferon. This is explained by the fact that its synthesis is limited by the body's resources, and the leukocytes in the blood have already produced part of this resource. Chronic infectious diseases have a completely detrimental effect on the production of IFN. According to some data, the synthesis of IFN-α is suppressed by autoimmune diseases, and IFN-γ - the development of malignant tumors.

In order for the tests for interferon status with determination of sensitivity to substances to be the most reliable, they should be taken before the prescription and use of medications.

Indications

Interferon status studies are carried out in acute, severe, chronic, protracted infections, relapses, tumors, immunodeficiencies. If defects are detected, then drug treatment is prescribed, which continues until the interferon level is normalized.

Contraindications

Everyone is allowed to take a blood test for interferon status. This is one of the areas of preventive measures that has no contraindications.

Complications

You should not use the information obtained for self-medication. Only a doctor can make an accurate diagnosis. If after the examination you contact a specialist for decoding, then any negative consequences are excluded.

Prices and clinics

The results of diagnostics are not yet a diagnosis, only a doctor can interpret them. On the portal you will find out where the immunological laboratories are located, where you can find out your interferon status, the cost of the procedure, how long it takes to get the results, and you will also be able to make an appointment with a professional.
