Enterostomy is an operation that involves creating a stoma on the intestines to drain the contents of the intestines (artificial anus) or for direct enteral nutrition.

General information

An opening is made in the intestine to remove its contents or to insert a special tube for enteral nutrition.

Procedure

Preparation

During the preparation process, the patient must do the following:

  • completely cleanse the intestines with a special solution;
  • stop taking a certain group of drugs that thin the blood (warfarin, etc.), anti-inflammatory drugs (for example, aspirin);
  • the anesthesiologist will examine you and determine the amount of anesthetic;
  • the doctor will discuss any physical and emotional difficulties that may arise after enterostomy.

Enterostomy procedure

First, the patient is given general anesthesia, which will make him unconscious. Then the surgeon makes an incision in the abdominal cavity. A small hole is made in the intestinal wall and a special drain is inserted, the other end of which is led into a special bag for collecting fecal waste. In some cases, it is necessary to create a permanent waste drainage channel. In this case, a colostomy is created, and a bag for collecting excrement is attached to the abdomen. To carry out enteral nutrition, a small hole is cut in the small intestine using a surgical device and a tube is inserted, which is attached with sutures. This operation is performed within 40-45 minutes.

Rehabilitation period

The period of hospital stay can last from 2 to 5 days. During this time, it will be necessary to take antibiotics and anti-nausea medications. To avoid dehydration, hospital staff will closely monitor the patient's diet and fluid intake.

Regular walks in the fresh air are a mandatory requirement for rapid recovery after the procedure.
