Lymph node biopsy is a technique that is performed when there is a suspicion of the development of oncological pathologies.

General information

A biopsy is prescribed when the lymph nodes are swollen and if oncology is suspected. A phlebologist, having received tissue samples from the node, sends them to the laboratory for subsequent analysis. Samples for biopsy can be taken from the groin, armpit, behind the ears, on the neck, chin or lower jaw.

Procedure

Preparation

The doctor conducts an initial examination. The patient, in turn, must:

  • inform what medications, vitamins he takes, the presence of allergies to drugs;
  • do not eat for 12 hours before surgery.
Take blood thinners one week before the biopsy. It is strictly forbidden to use non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

Lymph node biopsy

The puncture site is treated with a special anesthetic gel (relieves pain) and an antiseptic (disinfects). There are two types of biopsy:

  • Puncture - a more gentle method, which is carried out using a needle. 6-8 punctures are enough to collect material. Ultrasound diagnostics during the procedure will allow you to more accurately determine the puncture sites.
  • Open - the entire lymph node is removed through an incision. Then the specialist applies stitches and makes a bandage. The method is used for severe tumors. It is more painful and requires a long recovery.

The procedure takes about an hour.

Rehabilitation period

After the intervention, the patient remains in the hospital for several hours under observation. At home, it is necessary to keep the puncture sites clean to prevent infection.

In case of painful sensations, you can take painkillers only with the permission of a doctor.

Indications

The method is carried out with the purpose of:

  • preventing cancer;
  • clarifying the diagnosis.

Contraindications

Lymph node biopsy is not recommended for:

  • blood clotting disorders;
  • chronic diseases at the stage of decompensation;
  • local suppuration.

Complications

Possible consequences:

  • nerve damage;
  • bleeding;
  • infection with further inflammation.
