Electrocoagulation of keratoma is a method of removing skin keratomas by applying electric current to it.

General information

There are many types of cellular changes that occur on the surface of the skin. One of them is keratoma. This benign cellular formation is not dangerous, being simply altered cells of the epidermis. At first, as dermatologists say, under the influence of the sun, spots appear on the skin, more reminiscent of freckles. Then they begin to keratinize and peel. The spots harden and increase slightly in size, to about one or two centimeters. Although this neoplasm does not pose a danger in itself, over time it can undergo a process of cancerous degeneration, becoming a malignant tumor.

There are many methods for removing this kind of benign skin neoplasms. For example, a laser or radio wave method is used. Electrocoagulation is more effective:

  • it does not cause much discomfort during the operation;
  • low trauma, due to the fact that only the keratoma is exposed;
  • the device cauterizes the wound, disinfecting it;
  • during electrocoagulation, a hemostatic effect occurs.

Procedure

Preparation

The patient must visit a dermatologist and also take a number of necessary tests.

Process of electrocoagulation of keratoma

During the procedure, the surgeon uses a special device. This device affects tissues through ultra-high temperatures generated by electric current. Removal of the skin formation does not take long.

The electrocoagulator cuts off the required layer of tissue, while ultra-high temperatures disinfect and stop bleeding.

Rehabilitation period

The operation takes a little time, is performed on an outpatient basis and does not require serious rehabilitation. All the patient needs to do is monitor the wound, prevent infection and do not tear off the resulting scab, which will go away on its own in about a week. The patient is also prescribed antiseptic and healing ointments.

Indications and contraindications

Electrocoagulation is used in cases where keratomas are not very large.

Contraindications

This procedure has a number of contraindications. These include:

  • the patient has viral diseases;
  • blood clotting problems;
  • oncological diseases;
  • individual intolerance to this technique;
  • chronic diseases in the acute stage.

Complications

Thanks to the antiseptic and coagulating properties of the electrocoagulator, all complications are reduced to scarring.
